Howdy.. mom is coming to visit and want to take her down into the city for a Broadway show on Friday, 20May. I've heard one of the problems with Priceline.com is that you can't specify in your bid that you need two beds. Midtown or theater district would be great but almost anywhere would be fine (cabs are so cheap). 4 star preferable (3 is okay). Any recommendations? Thanks...

Welcome to BetterBidding!

You are correct that you can't specificy the number of beds with Priceline... however, even if this is a 'deal breaker' for you we can still help as there are some tricks you can use with other services to still get a great deal. However, all of this will be dependent upon your expected budget... do you have a ballpark idea of how mucy you're willing to spend?

Thanks... I figure I'm willing to spend between $200 and $250 (for a decent hotel - this is my beloved mother we're talking about :) ) I've stayed at the Shelburne on Murry Hill last year but we went through regular booking on Travelocity.com. That was a 3.5 star and was nice / decent. After my post I read that you can specifiy beds on Hotwire.com but didn't see that option when I was looking around on the site....

Since HOTWIRE allows a search for up to quad occupancy, and ensures enough sleeping accomodations for everyone in the included party, you can search for 3 people and be assured separate places to sleep.

I specifically wrote 'separate places to sleep' because under their terms this could mean one bed and a rollaway or pullout couch... but i would think that this would be done only in an extreme circumstance, and less likely at a higher rated hotel, but mention simply because the possibility does exist.

Search for 3 people via HOTWIRE shows hotels that i believe to be the Grand Hyatt and the Sheraton, both priced at the upper end of your stated rated ($240-$250)

I would also recommend considering the Eastgate Tower where you can get a 1BR suite for $239/nite. The floor plan indicates that it can sleep up to four, so even if you can't get 2 beds here there is definately a pull-out in the room. These rooms are HUGE by NYC standards and more like apartments than hotel rooms, and the reviews are very good.

Let us know your thoughts on any of the above, or if you're willing to take the chance on Priceline, and we'll advise further.

Sorry, but I cheated... the best I could find on Hotwire was a 2.5 star for $226 on that night (20May).

Then I thought I'd try my employers corporate travel (a Fortune 100 company) and ended up booking the Hilton Times Square on 42nd St for $218/night ($251 w/taxes). Its a four star hotel and the same rooms go for $309/night on their site and the majors (Expedia/Travelocity/Orbitz).

I'll have to remember resources and compare to Hotwire in the future. Thanks for your help. :)
