elik Posted March 15, 2011 Report Posted March 15, 2011 Hi!I am going to NYC with my boyfriend for 10 nights (5/19 to 5/29).I dont want to spend too much money, I was thinking something like 100+tax/night. I dont mind if the hotel room is modest or small, if it clean and has a private bathroom is ok for me. So I was thinking on a 2*.About the zone, I want it to be safe (not too quiet) at nights, and close to the subway. I was told Time Square is too noisy, so I was thinking on USW, USE, MTE, MTW, CPS. I am not sure about Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, ESB or MSG, because I have not too much info about those areas...I tried a few biddings but failed.Any advice about a good area? Do you think I will be able to find at least 2* in a good area for 100 dollars or am I dreaming?Thank you very much for any advice you can give me.Best regards!!eli
AaronJB Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Unfortunately, NYC during the Spring season can be quite expensive, and $100 for these dates - especially for a longer stay - is not likely going to be successful. Additionally, we don't recommend bidding for less than 2.5*, as the quality level at 2* and below varies substantially. What bids have you placed so far?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
elik Posted March 16, 2011 Author Report Posted March 16, 2011 Hi Aaron, thank you for your answer.Actually I didnt bid with 2* yet, I wanted to post here before trying it.I tried:- Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown West, Midtown East, Central Park South (diferent combinations, an all of them too)- 2.5*- 100 USD...with no successs.
AaronJB Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 I definitely understand being on a budget, but unfortunately - given the nice weather - this is a particularly tough time of year - especially for a longer stay.I'm not familiar with the outer parts of the NYC as much and hopefully others can comment on the transit options for getting into the city, but I do see the Aloft Brooklyn, which is a new property - it actually doesn't open until 4/21. That is showing at $105 - half off - on Expedia (possibly due to it being a new property and wanting to get people in the door to try it out.) That might be an interesting option for a touch over the $100 price point; while you'd have to travel into the city, you'd be staying at a nice (practically brand new) property. There is also a 4* in the Brooklyn area on HOTWIRE for $108.Unfortunately, the cheapest Manhattan listing on HOTWIRE for these dates is a 2* in Central Park for $145. The Pod, which is a popular budget property, is $169 for a room with a shared bath.Thank you for using the site's Expedia, PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.
elik Posted March 16, 2011 Author Report Posted March 16, 2011 I understand...How bad could be a 2* property? Do you think I will succeed if I try it? As far as I know, Priceline will only give you rooms with a private bath.We prefer a better location more than the hotel itself. We are a young couple not very demanding.Anyway, if I can not find anything in Manhattan, the Brooklyn option you mention seems to be a very nice choice.(Sorry for my english, I am not a native english speaker). Thanks a lot,eli
thereuare Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 How bad could be a 2* property? While there may be some 2* properties which meet your needs, there may be others which do not... and with PRICELINE / HOTWIRE you can't choose which type you will get :)Do you think I will succeed if I try it?Hard to say as $100 doesn't go very far in NYC in the Spring season, and most users head on the side of caution and don't bid at the lower star levels. If search HOTWIRE and look at most of the 2.5*/2* hotels within manhattan you'll see they have fairly low (65%) user recommendation levels... not the type of properties i'd necessarily want to stay in for 10 nites.Based upon the above let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. elik Posted March 16, 2011 Author Report Posted March 16, 2011 Based upon the above let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.Mmm I'm a little lost! I'm not sure what to do... :)
AaronJB Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Mmm I'm a little lost! I'm not sure what to do... :)You could try to bid for a 2* up to the $100 level; you are probably more likely to get a win in the Downtown/Soho/Financial District area, although in that area you can wind up pretty far South in the city (but you are in the city vs. outlying areas.) A 2* may take more than $100 in this area, and my guess is that it will likely take more than $100 in the more central areas (MTE, MTW, CPS, TS, Chelsea, ESB).The risk at the 2* level becomes that the variation in quality can be pretty substantial. There are some budget properties in NYC that get good reviews, some that really do not. When you bid at 2* level, you have to take the risk that you could wind up with either. If you got a not-so-great property, you're stuck for 10 days.OR:You could take a look at one of the Brooklyn options.OR:You could try bidding on a 2* (again, knowing the risks involved) and if you go up to a certain level and are still not accepted, use the Brooklyn options as an alternative. Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
elik Posted March 17, 2011 Author Report Posted March 17, 2011 If I choose to go out of the city, is Brooklyng the best choice? do you recommend that area rather than Long Island or Jersey City?Thanksssssss
thereuare Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 I favor the Jersey City Waterfront area, but at less than 4* you won't likely end up in the Waterfront area, which would probably make Queens/Brooklyn your best option.Long Island City puts you closer to midtown Manhattan at lower star rated hotels.... Brooklyn can put you in the nicer Sheraton at about your budget but a little further from midtown. I don't love either area, but i think i'd take Brooklyn over Long Island City if those were my two choices. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
