Priceline Hotel: Need help/advice. Visiting 4/20-4/24 (4 nights) 4* or 3.5*?

I am going to NYC with a female friend of mine that I'm hoping to impress, so far my bids for a 4* have been rejected up into the $140s. Is it likely that new rooms will be released to Priceline in the next couple of weeks that will still allow me to get a room in this general range? Honestly I don't want to spend more than $130 a night plus taxes and fees. We have a lot we plan on doing in NYC and I'm not made of money.

How would you compare the quality and comfort level of the 3.5* properties to the 4*? Am I better off with a 4* because of the grandeur and flair of the hotels, or are the 3.5* just as good and I'm just spending more on the extra half a star without the need?

And yes, I do understand bidding strategy, and I do use the board's link to place my bids. And I have not gotten any counteroffers any of the times I've tried bidding. Which has been constantly over the last few weeks.

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Opinions on properties vary from person-to-person, but I think there are certainly instances in NYC (and other major cities) where there are 3.5*'s that are nicer than some of the 4*'s and vice versa (and some 3*'s that may be a little nicer than some of the 3.5*'s, etc.)

Unfortunately, in NYC rates really ramp up in the Spring and rates on these dates look higher than normal for the season. It would depend on which zone/s you are interested in, but in terms of Midtown 4*'s, I think a 4* will likely take at least $175 and quite possibly up to $200 (based on the regular/HOTWIRE rates I'm seeing.) Unfortunately, I'd guess rates for 3.5* will likely be quite expensive - the cheapest 3.5* in Midtown on HOTWIRE is $232. The cheapest Midtown 4* on HOTWIRE is $219 for a property in the Empire State Building zone, but I'm guessing that's the Roger Williams, which also charges a daily fee of I believe $19.

Man, I would love to catch that Midtown central deal. Anyway to find out if it happens again? I'm looking for the 20th-24th, and the Downtown deal is still showing but everything I've heard recommends staying near Midtown. Any guess on which Downtown hotel that might be, and how easy is it to get to the subway from that area? I plan on being pretty touristy and also to hit a number of high-end shops.

Please provide the details of the downtown listing (amenities, star rating) and we would be happy to try to ID. Staying in Midtown is optimal, although if downtown is considerably cheaper, then there are public transit options.
