Hi guys,

I'm looking for a hotel for my upcoming stay in Apirl 2011 in NYC. Unfortunately, it seems like a pretty busy (and expensive) time.

I only found one priceline win in the CalenderofWins, which is the 4* Renaissance Hotel 57 for 119$. Do you think I can get that deal for a whole week?

Pricelimit is 130$ excl. tax, so i'll probably try to bid on 3.5* and 4* hotels in all Manhattan areas.

What would be a appropriate price range for 3* hotels? I'm a little bit concerned about winning mediocre or bad hotels when bidding on 3*..

Thanks in advance!

The win you referenced above is for a Sunday nite, the slowest nite in the hotel business, so that is likely why the price was so good and i'm doubtful you'll be able to get a 4* at $130 or less for whole week.

Which zone(s) are you willing to accept? Did you want to try first for a 4* up to your limit and then, if rejected, try for a 3.5*... or is your goal the least expensive 3.5* or better for this stay? You may succeed at $130 for a 3.5* but i think you'll likely fall a little short... odds only increase slightly for a 3* (which may not succeed at 3* either)

Let us know regarding the zones and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

My primary goal is the least expensive (and still okayish) 3.5* or 3* property. Acceptable zones are Chelsea, ESP, MSG MTW, TS, CPS, MTE, Hell's Kitchen.

For now, I'd like to keep Upper East/West Side and Downtown out of the picture.

Thanks!

So to confirm... you want to try for the least expensive 3* or better for this stay?

Also to note, at the under 4* level the MTE has the Millenium UN which can be about a 15 minute walk to the subway, would this be acceptable? Also, the CPS contains the Hudson Hotel, which has extremely small rooms (even by NYC standards)... would this be an acceptable outcome?

Please confirm that you'd be ok with the hotels above if received and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

My aunt for whom I'm looking for a hotel asked me to hurry b/c she had to leave early, so I used the strategy posted in liron&maor's thread below and altered it a bit.

I bid up to 120$ which my aunt declared to be the new pricelimit and I didn't win anything. Now she's going to have to look for a hotel herself.

Thanks anyways, great assistance here!

Did you bit for 3* up to 120$ with no success?

As this stay isn't until April... why can't she continue to use PRICELINE or HOTWIRE in the days, weeks, months ahead?

Don't know. That's just what she said. I guess she wants to sit next to me while bidding..

Correct.

I'm there from the 14th (April) and also looking for a 4* for 4 nights in a similar area. I haven't bid yet because I'm still coming to grips with the site. We have a 9y.o daughter so want a room with a separate bedroom - is that called a suite in the US? And can I bid for one on Hotwire? BTW I've kinda been assuming that all hotels are close to a subway, but don't think my daughter would cope with a 15 minute walk to (and from) the subway every day...

Hi guys, I am on again. My aunt decided to give it another try.

So just to reconfirm: I'm looking for the cheapest 3* or better property for my stay.

Since a 15 minute walk to the subway (Millenium UN) wouldn't be acceptable, the MTE zone is out of the picture. CPS with the Hudson Hotel is okay, though.

What would you think is an appropriate pricelimit?

Currently I'm guessing it will likely take ~$150-$165 to be successful at the 3 star level, but what a good price limit is depends upon the best rate you (or your aunt) are able to find thru conventional booking channels... if she's unsuccessful with PRICELINE where, and for how much, would she stay?

Yeah, prices are skyhigh for the stay, so I'm thinking of alternatives in New Jersey/Long Island City.

I am aware that this is the Priceline forum but for these areas Hotwire also becomes a possible option. Any proposals or tips?

If you search HOTWIRE for your dates does anything appear within your aunt's budget, zone and star rating requirements?

Regardless of which service, PRICELINE or HOTWIRE, you decide to go with, you should have researched your best deal thru conventional booking channels as only then will you know how high you should bid on PRICELINE and/or how good of a deal a HOTWIRE offer may be.

Tried in vain for a couple of days to get a cheaper bid but prices seem to have skyrocketed.

In the end, my bid for ESB, MSG and MTE was accepted by the Radisson Lexington, which I am ok with.

Used the forum PRICELINE link of course :)
