sureshot08 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Hello,I am trying to get a 3* or higher hotel in downtown Chicago (Millennium Park or North Michigan Ave) for 5/7-5/10. I know it's difficult that weekend because of a conference (which is the reason I'm going). I've tried bidding (via links on this site, using rebid zones) up to $105 for 4*, 3.5*, and 3* without luck. Even tried up to $102 for 2.5*. Hoping not to spend more than this. Looks like another user had luck with similar price and dates. Any suggestions? Thanks.
thereuare Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 If you're at your limit and your bids have not yet been accepted your choices come down to:1) increase your bid2) lower your star rating3) wait it out and try again4) SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BIDI'm not sure if it will help but is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? If not, i don't think you're too far away... given current prices i'm guessing you may be able to win somewhere in the $135-$150 area.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. sureshot08 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 Splitting my bid would be an option, but not sure how to do that such that it would help. Could go down to 2*, but not sure the quality at that level. I'll probably just keep trying. Hotwire has a 3* Museum Campus (looks like Chicago South Loop Hotel) that I could get if no luck on Priceline.
thereuare Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Are you saying you don't understand how to split the bid OR you don't understand why that would help? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. sureshot08 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 I understand how to do it, but don't understand why that would help as 2 of the 3 days are weekend days.
thereuare Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Imagine the following scenario (which prices for each nite following the example hotel)Hotel 1: $100, $100, sold-outHotel 2: $200, $200, $100Bidding $100 for the complete stay would result in rejection as it's not enough to win a room at either property for the complete stay, but if you bid the first 2 nites together and the last nite on its own you'd be able to win each property for the given time frame at $100/nite (although would need to switch hotels after the first two nites)Does this make it clearer? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. AaronJB Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 I really would not recommend the South Loop Hotel; while it may be an okay property (although I think the name is a little iffy; it's really not in the Loop), it's really not in an optimal location at all unless you're going to a conference at McCormick Place. I definitely wouldn't stay there from a tourist perspective. I'd rather stay downtown and have to switch hotels.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
sureshot08 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 I am, in fact, going to a conference at McCormick Place. Will keep trying on Priceline, though.
AaronJB Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Thank you for keeping us updated and hope your next round of bidding is successful. The South Loop Hotel would be okay for being reasonably near McCormick, but there's not a great deal around it and it's a trek to the more central downtown area.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
sureshot08 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Got accepted at $110 for Chicago's Essex Inn (3*) in Millennium Park zone.Total came to $391.44. Rack rate with tax on their website is $688.94, so still much better.
thereuare Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Congratulations on your success!Hope you're pleased wit the results and this property works well for your plans... hopefully providing a good midpoint between the convention and the nightlife of 'downtown'.Thank you for sharing your win with the board. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay. AaronJB Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Good result in terms of location. If your convention at McCormick is providing transportation from nearby hotels, they may be providing it from the Hilton up the street at 700 S Michigan Ave. Otherwise, this is an easy taxi ride to McCormick and a pretty easy "L" or bus ride up to Michigan Ave. As I posted in another thread This area is quiet at night, but if you're looking for a burger/fries style place, I recommend Hackney's Printers Row (there's a save $10 if you join their email club deal on the website), which is a few blocks away. Yolk is also a popular breakfast place a couple blocks away. The nearby Custom House is also good, and there are other options (such as pizza - Lou Malnati's) nearby.
