monyetz Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Hiya,I'm planning a trip to NY from April 20th - 22nd & April 23rh - 25th and looking for advice where's the best place to stay and how I should start my priceline bidding.Looking for room for 2 people, vibrant surrounding & budget is $150 - $160/night before taxes. This will be my first visit and I assume subway is the best transportation means in NY?I heard from a friend of mine who just went to NY that Jersey City is actually a pretty good place to stay and is cheaper, even though it's quite far from NY itself.Any suggestions?
L-Wag Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I've been to NYC quite a few times, and the subway is definitely the best way to get around. For how long you are staying, I'd suggest the 7-Day unlimited ride MetroCard for $29. And before you go study the map a bit and get familiar with the express/local train thing.
monyetz Posted March 11, 2011 Author Report Posted March 11, 2011 Thanks L-Wag. Didn't know there's a 7 day unlimited metrocard.I'm actually going for 7 days, but will be going to Boston in the middle of my NY trip for a couple of days. The metrocard is definitely worth it though.

monyetz Posted March 11, 2011 Author Report Posted March 11, 2011 I'll create a new topic for 4/23 - 4/25.My desired star rating is 3* - 4* and zones I'm looking for are Times Square, Chelsea or Downtown Soho. Thanks!
thereuare Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Are you willing to pay more for a 4* vs. a 3.5* vs a 3* OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better for this stay? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. monyetz Posted March 15, 2011 Author Report Posted March 15, 2011 I'd be willing to pay more for a 4*.Areas I'm looking are MTW, CPS, ESB, Hell's Kitchen and TS.Maximum bid I'll go is $180 - $190.
thereuare Posted March 15, 2011 Report Posted March 15, 2011 I think your budget will likely fall short for a 4* but we'll start there and see how it goes. You may also want to consider including MTE in your bidding as that zone often offers some good value and (at the 4* level) typically works well for the average visitor to the city.At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTW, CPS and ESB (and MTE if you choose to include it)...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* TS and HK...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* MTW, ESB and TS (and MTE if you choose to do so)...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* CPS and HK...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* MTW, ESB, HK, TS and CPS (and MTE if you choose to do so)...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $190Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. monyetz Posted March 19, 2011 Author Report Posted March 19, 2011 Heya,Been bidding without success. Is it because it's about Easter?Does this mean I would need to increase my maximum bid price or I could try again as the dates are coming?
thereuare Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 My guess is that spring seasonality factors are playing more of a factor in your rejected bids then Easter. You can certainly try again in the days and weeks ahead, but realize that while you hope for rates to come down, it's also possible that they continue even higher. What i'm guessing is the 3.5* Club Quarters Rockefeller Center is currently offered on HOTWIRE for $112/nite... it's not a 4* hotel, but it does have an excellent location and generally gets good reviews. For the savings perhaps the trade-off is worth the 1/2 drop in star rating?3.5* Midtown CentralRestaurant, Business, InternetPlease use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know your thoughts and/or what you decide and we'll take it from there. monyetz Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 That sounds like an awesome deal!I've never used hotwire before. How do I get that deal?
thereuare Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 If you use this link to go to HOTWIRE and search 4/20/11-4/22/11 do you see a 3.5* hotel offered for about $112?I'm no longer seeing the hotel i mentioned above, but am seeing a new one which looks to be equally as good:3.5* Midtown Central for $117Fitness, Restaurant, Business, InternetThis matches multiple properties, but given the price, 95% recommended by HOTWIRE users, and a 4.0/5.0 Tripadvisor rating, i think this is a pretty good deal.Do you see this when searching HOTWIRE? Would this work for your plans? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. monyetz Posted March 21, 2011 Author Report Posted March 21, 2011 Couldn't find the hotwire deal anymore :)Seems like it was already too late.Anyways, tried re-bidding again and expanded zone to downtown soho.Got a 4* Gild Hall - A thompson hotel for $200.
thereuare Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Sorry to see you weren't able to get the 3.5* HOTWIRE offer to appear on your own search. The Gild Hall is quite a bit more expensive, but it's a very nice property which generally gets pretty good reviews. As you didn't previously include the Downtown zone among those which were acceptable, did you go thru the bidding strategy above and then add Downtown at the very end?Thank you for sharing your win with the board. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay.
