I was bidding for a room for my parents in Mammoth Lakes. They wanted me to go higher than I typically would bid for a 2 star rating, but they were satisfied with the results, especially since it was still a good discount from the hotel's listed rack rate.

I noticed Shiloh Inn wasn't on Priceline's regular list of hotels for Mammoth Lakes and was surprised to get this hotel. Is it typical for hotels to be available ONLY through the bidding process? This is first time I have seen this.

Yes, this is nothing strange. Bidding and retail section is two diffrent services and you should never compare hotels and zones since they are diffrent.
