Priceline Hotel: 4* Singapore Help

Hi all,

I just noticed that most of the winning singapore bids posted here are for 5*. I wonder if there is any reason for this? I am looking at booking 2 rooms for 3/30/2011-4/3/2011. Priceline suggests 4 star, riverside to get the best dea. Any suggestions how I can go about this? I saw mrs leon's winning bid at 85$. I wonder if I should use this as my guide.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Hotel star ratings overseas have different standards then their US counterparts, with ratings in Europe and else where being a bit more 'generous'... you can often deduct 1/2-1 stars from a non-North American property to get the equivalent US/Canada star rating. This difference, along with being overseas and preferring the 'comfort' of having a higher rated hotel likely accounts for part of the reason there is more 5* bidding then 4*, as well as the better deals/values are often at the higher star ratings since there is much more margin for the hotel to discount.

With the above noted, we do see some 4* bidding in this area, so it's not as if it's non-existent and people are afraid of this star rating in this area.

Let us know what star rating you'd like to try for, your maximum bid, and the zone(s) you're willing to accept, we'll then suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Thanks for the informative and quick reply!

I'm ok with all zones except the East Coast. Wish to book at least a *4 hotel. As I will be booking for two rooms and four nights (3/30-4/3), I would like to keep my max bid to $85 per room. Willing to adjust if this amount is impossible but I would be very much happy if I could get a room at this price.

To avoid any confusion (especially if/when the zones names and/or boundaries change) you're willing to accept:

Bugis

City Hall-Marina bay

Financial

Orchard Road

Riverside

... and you're looking for the least expensive 4* or better in any of these zones, correct?

Please confirm and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Thanks for the suggestions. Must admit I got impatient at some points, but eventually reached the $75 mark. No luck :)

I would still like to go on though. Should I inch up dollar by dollar?

And another question, when I click on your PRICELINE link, what page do I go to? I've been clicking on the Mytrips button. Have I been doing it correctly?

Thanks again for all the help.

Thanks for taking the care to suggest this new rebid strategy. Followed instructions to the dot, used your PRICELINE link and got rejected each time :) I reached the $83 mark/ rejection and decided to stop there for now. I found the Metro YMCA hotel online at SGD 240++ for a quad room, with breakfast. It's about the same price as two Priceline rooms at $85 (if this bid even gets accepted!)

In the meantime, maybe others can also post about their bidding experiences? I just noticed that this thread got quite a number of views so there must be other singapore hotel bidders out there :)

Will post again should I decide to go for $85 and up! Thanks again for all the help.

I just noticed that most of the winning singapore bids posted here are for 5*. I wonder if there is any reason for this?

Seahorsee,

In areas like Singapore where hotel prices are definitely on the low side, I often bid for higher star levels than I normally do. It is an opportunity to try a bit of luxury at a price I can afford.

On the other hand, when I'm bidding in an area (and season) when prices are really high, I'll drop down to lower star levels to keep things affordable. A recent bid in Key West, FL is an example - it took $126 just to score a 2 1/2*. And would have taken another $165 for an extension to a second night (I found a less expensive alternative for that one).
