SoonerGirl Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 I have spent the last few days reading through previous posts regarding trips to NYC. I followed your bidding help on how to bid on a 4* in NYC by using the re-bid zones. I started at $120 and ended with $160. My questions is - when I am allowed to begin the bidding process again, do I keep bidding the same amounts? Is it likely that prices may change from week to week? Or, am I going to have to bid more than $160 to get a room for this stay? Also, can I go wrong with a 3 1/2 *? Maybe I should expand my search to include 3 1/2* properties. My preferred zones are MTE, TS, ESB, CPS and MTW. My budget is $200, but obviously want to get the best available rate.
thereuare Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding!Just like hotel direct rates fluctuate from day-to-day... so does the amount needed to have a bid accepted. It's all based upon hotel occupancy levels (ie- supply/demand).At the 3.5* level there are some zones you may want to consider adding (such as MSG) and some zones you may want to consider avoiding (MTE and/or CPS due to location of some hotels and room size)... but ultimately it comes down to what you expect from the hotel this trip, what type of hotels you're used to staying in, your budget, etc.Your stay is right at the inflection point of Spring rates (expensive) and Summer rates (inexpensive)... and at this poing it's unknown when we'll see the exact shift from high season pricing to low season pricing. If you really want a 4* hotel and think that will augment your trip then i wouldn't lower your star rating at this point in time as it's still quite early before your stay.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. SoonerGirl Posted January 30, 2011 Author Report Posted January 30, 2011 Thanks for your prompt response.A 4* would be nice, but not necessary. Just looking for a clean hotel in a good location. Celebrating our 25th anniversary. Wanting it to be special - but are willing to stay at a less than 4* place which would allow us to spend more money on food, shows and baseball! Any idea what our bidding price range would be for 3 1/2* during this time?
AaronJB Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Rates aren't too terrible for NYC on these dates; I think as noted above it's sort of a middle ground period where temperatures aren't too bad - the core of the Summer period in NYC (July/August) is generally cheaper due to the heat. So, it does come down to a matter of whether or not demand comes in above expectations and whether or not something is going on on these dates. You've bid up to $160 for a 4*; I don't think you're probably that far off from a win. HOTWIRE, for example, has a 4* in MTE for $207. However, it is early - if you want to get the trip set right away, we would be happy to to suggest how to proceed. Otherwise, I'd try again in a week up to $160 and see if any inventory has opened up at that level. $160 could be the "ceiling" for the time being, and you could move up the ceiling over time if $160 continues to not be accepted.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 At the moment i don't think you'll see any huge savings by lowering to a 3.5* property... personally i'd wait this one out a bit.If not having a reservation makes you nervous find a fully refundable back-up reservation which will protect you from rates rising while you continue to try PRICELINE.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. SoonerGirl Posted February 1, 2011 Author Report Posted February 1, 2011 Went through the entire bidding process again. Won the Kitano New York Hotel for $170 per night. Their website lists $313 as the best rate for this same time period. Thanks for the help! One more question - we are flying into Newark Airport on Thursday evening and plan on staying in a hotel near the airport that first night to save a little money and for convenience sake. Any bidding tips? We just want a clean place to stay for a great price.
