samwong Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Trying to get one room either at MTE (hopefully The Benjamin) or CPS (Le Meridian). Starting bidding at $90 up to $125, but still no luck. I saw a successful Le Meridian/CPS bid of $101 for 7/2 to 7/5. Is there a strategy I should be using if I really dont mind MTE or CPS. Used PRICELINE link. Tks in advance
thereuare Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding!Rates are date specific, so even though the other user won for dates near the same as yours, rates for those particular dates (weekend and during a holiday with fewer business travelers occupying hotel rooms) not be the same as your own (which spans an entire week). As well, rates change over time, and the win you reference was received nearly 3 months ago.If you let us know your maximum bid for this stay we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. However, i'll also add that if you're looking for the best deal, i would include as many acceptable zones as possible in your bidding... including more zones allows more hotels the opportunity to accept your bid, and at the 4* level in NYC there is often little difference location-wise (in terms of convenience) between most of the midtown zones. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.Let us know the info above and your thoughts on including other zones and we'll advise accordingly. samwong Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 Other than Times Square (which can be a zoo at times!), I would not mind other areas, except that since I would be relying on public transport, proximity to subways would be a major consideration. My budget would be $120-130 tops for a 4 star, since hotel rates are moderately lower in summer. Appreciate any assitance.
thereuare Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Personally i don't necessarily recommend avoiding Times Square, as much as i do recommend not focusing solely on this area. Usually we hear from users who only want to stay in this one zone because it's their first time to NYC and they want to be 'in the center of it all' and to these users i DEFINATELY recommend considering other areas.Similarly, i don't necessarily recommend avoiding the area entirely and odds favor you won't end up right in the heart of Broadway/Seventh Ave/44th Street... but even if you do, it's a simple side street away to walk crosstown or continue uptown or downtown. However, it's your stay and you need to be comfortable with the area(s) you choose. At the 4* level i think MTE, MTW, CPS, ESB (and as per dicussion above) TS all work fine for the average user... please confirm if these are all acceptable (and clarify your thoughts on if you still want to avoid TS) and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. samwong Posted January 28, 2011 Author Report Posted January 28, 2011 Appreciate your comments and advice. Will go along with your recommendation and await your strategy. Thanks a zillion.
thereuare Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I think $130 will likely fall a little short for a 4* hotel at this time, but if you want to give it a shot (and assuming Times Square is now acceptable)...At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTE, MTW, ESB and TS...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 4* CPS...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...Select 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, ESB and TS...Bid $118, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $123, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $128, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. samwong Posted February 13, 2011 Author Report Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks, will follow recommended strategy and report accordingly in due course.Have been unsuccessful bidding up to $138 and even after adding UWS. Since July is considered a slower month, and considering that I was able to get the Empire for $120 last year, is it still too early for the July inventory to be released? Should I try other 4 star zones and if so which are the ones with subway access or should I also try out 3.5 star (with subway access). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
thereuare Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 While i wouldn't call it strong, the NYC hotel market has rebounded nicely since the economic uncertainty/woes of last year and rates are somewhat higher than a year ago. I imagine hotels are hoping for continued strength and perhaps not discounted too deeply, hoping to continue to sell rooms on their own (at full price) rather than fill them at deeply discounted prices. There is still plenty of time between now and your stay... i wouldn't be lowering my bid at this point and instead would holdout for the 4* hotel you're hoping for. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. pcalixto Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I think I was lucky with a reservation with no cancelation fees for $137 in a 3* On the ave hotel in Upper west side. I've been trying to bidding a few weeks ago for this same dates and I'm no luck yet. So I think it's better wait some time to try again, maybe the inventory is not available yet. Keep us informed about it...

Bidded using recommended strategyup to $143 (adding Queensborough as a new re-bid zone) still no luck so far!
AaronJB Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 I'd imagine you have to be close, given HOTWIRE prices - $164 for a 4* in ESB and $174 for a 4* in MTE.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Romelle Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Sometimes it seems as if the better NYC deals are received by last-minute bids. With your cancelable reservation, you are in a very good position to just calmly check maybe once a week until your trip. Very good tactic!Romelle
