akiko Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Hi, I'm a newbie here. I've never used priceline before but would like to give it a try.I plan to stay in Las Vegas for 3 nights this May on Wed, Thu, Fri. The hotel rate on weekday is cheap while on weekend it's twice or three times higher.I'm wondering if I should bid 3 nights together or split it into 2 bids (weekday and weekend). My idea is that my bid might be accepted at a very low rate during weekday so I will pay premium only on Friday night. Or I have a chance to pay less in total if I bid 3 nights together. Any suggestion, please?
Romelle Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Priceline now does some averaging, so you could bid with that in mind. The only time it doesn't work is when there is NO availability for some nights. Then it doesn't make any difference how high you bid.Do first check the hotel web site rates directly so you have a clear idea of what your maximum bid should be. Some of them are accessible though the Las Vegas Checker (center top of page). More are under the Support/Travel Links tab (just above here). And the rest can usually be found with something obvious like www.bellagio.com. The Las Vegas hotel web sites sometimes have specials that are better than one can obtain through bidding. If you are aiming for any particular hotel, you might also consider Hotwire. Based on the amenities, an educated guess can be made as to what hotel you would got. Not a sure thing, but very good odds.Have you figured out which Priceline areas you want to bid? Also, which star levels? If you'd like a more specific bidding strategy, do post back with that information plus the actual dates and an idea of your budget.Romelle

akiko Posted January 16, 2011 Author Report Posted January 16, 2011 Thanks both of you for a reply. My plan is We-Fr 5/18-5/21. I'd like to bid for 4* or 5* hotels north/south strip. I want to avoid Westin but I know I couldn't. I want to pay around $300 (including taxes) per room for my entire stay. Any idea of how much I should bid (before taxes)? It seems impossible for 5* hotel. Is a 4* hotel possible or I should bid 3.5* as well?I'll travel with 4 other people so we need 2 rooms (2 in one and 3 in another room). Is there a chance of requesting a room with 2 beds without paying extra fee? I know Priceline guarantees only 2 person in a room. That makes me wonder if I should use Priceline or Hotwire in this case but Hotwire choices are limited for 3 person. Any suggestion is welcome.
thereuare Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 If you bid PRICELINE there is no way to avoid the Westin unless you don't include the Strip South zone in your bidding at all. As well, there is no way to know if the hotel will be able to accommodate your request for triple occupancy, and if so, if there will be an additional charge involved.Unfortunately the double/triple occupancy may need to be an issue you have to accept as HOTWIRE doesn't show anything within your budget when searching for 2rooms/5adults.So i think first you need to come to terms with the double/triple occupancy issue, then if that is acceptable, you need to decide if you want to go with HOTWIRE in order to try to avoid the Westin, try PRICELINE for the North Strip zone only, OR take the risk of landing the Westin and include the Strip South zone in your bidding.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. akiko Posted January 17, 2011 Author Report Posted January 17, 2011 I will talk to my friends about double/triple occupancy issue and about Westin too. If they insist it, I might need to give up Priceline option and look for a good hotel deal instead. I'll come back to update after we've reached our decision. We actually haven't booked our flight yet. This board is helpful. I will definitely use the link from this site if I decide to use PRICELINE or HOTWIRE.
thereuare Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Also note that besides PRICELINE and HOTWIRE, our support page has links to many online booking agencies, as well as many Las Vegas properties... please check their for any hotel direct purchases you make.Let us know whatever you decide to do for this stay or if we can be of further help. akiko Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 Hi, I want to update our decision. We've decided to give up Priceline this time since we need 2 beds in a room. I used Las Vegas checker from the link above to check hotel promotion but I haven't seen anything during my stay yet. I'll keep checking and hopefully, there will be some promotion when it gets closer.
