First time member.

Destination: Las Vegas

Dates: 4/13-4/17

Desires: 5* hotel

Price range: about $150

Tried unsuccessfully starting @ $120 all the way upto $170 on PRICELINE. PL asking to bid @ $190 which is outside my budget. Any suggestions?

Tried Hotwire. Showing 5* hotel south strip for $169, according to the list that would be Vdara or Aria. Is this a reasonable price for the time of the year?

Thanks in advance.

It's Vdara.. the non smoking icon, and no casino.

Well, I see the Trump on there for $114...

It's quite high, that's a good season for them because the weather is good. Anything against a 4 star? On hotwire I see a 4 star South Strip for $109 which would be I'm guessing Paris or Planet Hollywood. To me, those hotels are just as nice. I think I'd rather stay at one of those than Vdara for $169, at least they have amenities, casino, shopping, restaurants.

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Please provide the amenity icons showing with the HOTWIRE listing in question. Are you looking for a particular area? Would you be interested in dropping down to a 4* instead of a 5* if it meant being more within your desired budget?

It might be worth your time to check rates on the Las Vegas hotel web sites for your dates. Sometimes it is possible to get rooms that way at less than one has to bid via Priceline. Las Vegas is a little unique this way, although it also is possible to get great bargains from bidding.

Some of the hotel sites can be accessed via the Las Vegas Checker just above on this page. There are links to some others under the Support/Travel Links tab, also just above. And then there is the list of hotels others have reported as wins in the very first post in this area.

For the record, I speak from personal experience, having bid first and then checked.

Thanks for all the great replies.

I have nothing against 4* hotels. I was hoping to spoil and impress my wife with a 5* hotel.

Would you recommend same strategy for getting the 4* hotels?

My thought was that since there are more 4* hotels in more locations, it would be more difficult to try to eliminate the ones I don't want.

It looks like most of the 5* hotels are located north strip with Aria and Vdara in south strip. I did not want Trump for various reasons.

Close to the strip within walking distance to the other casinos and attractions would be a plus.

Once again thank you for all the help

Is $170 your top budget as you can usually under-cut PRICELINE's counter offers... sometimes it takes just $1 more than the previous bid... sometimes $1 less than the counter-offer... so the 'right' number is probably someplace between $171 and $189. If $190 is beyond your budget but something like $175 or $180 is still do-able, it would be worth a shot if you're looking for the 5* experience.

If the above is beyond your budget or you try it and are turned down, what about the Vdara and/or Aria options? How much was the 5* on HOTWIRE? Also, when you bid up to $170 previously did you only bid the Strip North zone or did you also include the Strip South zone?

I think $175 would be the most I am willing to pay. I didn't try what you have suggested. When I tried to go up by $5, it said I need to go up by $40 to $190 so I just stopped trying. May be I will try again. Does PL remember my highest bid or can I start from low again?

As for the Hotwire, there was one 5* listed (south strip) for $169. It seemed like Vdara (or Aria) which would be fine. I just was wondering whether this is a good price. Thanks.

If you've exhausted your bids for the day, you can start over in 24 hours.

What were the amenity icons showing with the 5* South Strip listing?

If you look on a travel service such as Expedia for these dates, the Vdara is $184 and the Aria is $242. If you use coupon code FROST11, that takes $10 off per night at either property and would likely work for other hotels, as well.

To increase less than the counter-offer you need to use your re-bid zones... not enter a lower number in the counter-offer box. In 24 hours your previous bid(s) are completely forgotten and you can star higher, lower, new zones, previous zones, etc, etc... whatever you'd like.

Did you bid the Strip South zone at all? Are you interested in this zone as well?

So I got an e-mail from PL to try again. I started with $150 zone 7 (north strip) was rejected. Added south strip and tried for $155 which was accepted. It turned out to be Aria. It seems like a good price for the time of the year (4/13-4/17). It's interesting that just a few days ago, I was rejected upto $170 for the same zones. I wonder if I waited longer I could have gotten a better deal. But I am satisfied since I got a 5* hotel at a price point I wanted. Your thoughts? Good deal or not? Thanks for all the great comments.

Congrats on your success! :)

Very nice deal for this 5* property for the Spring. If you bid this zone previously and it wasn't accepted, inventory may have recently come online at this level. There is no way to know what rates will do between now and then, but I think this is a very good rate for the time period - and reg. rate is $242.
