greatdiehl2 Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 HI, great site! Looking for one room in NYC this weekend. I have never tried bidding on priceline and I am a bit nervous. We only have $150 per night to spend and would like to keep it at 3 stars or better. I know this is prime season but we can be flexible with location as long as the area is safe and close to the subway.
greatdiehl2 Posted December 1, 2010 Author Report Posted December 1, 2010 HI, great site! Looking for one room in NYC this weekend. I have never tried bidding on priceline and I am a bit nervous. We only have $150 per night to spend and would like to keep it at 3 stars or better. I know this is prime season but we can be flexible with location as long as the area is safe and close to the subway.I am getting ready to bid in PRICELINE. Is there a strategy to the whole star thing to ensure we get a nice hotel room?
AaronJB Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)This is one of the busiest weekends of the holiday season in NYC, and room rates are quite high. Additionally, with PRICELINE, there is no way to guarantee a hotel right near the subway; some hotels - such as a couple of the 3.5* properties in Midtown East - are a bit of a trek to the nearest subway. Is your max bid $150 "all-in" (w/taxes/fees) or $150 + taxes/fees? In terms of $150 + taxes/fees, that has a slight chance of being enough for a 3.5* and a moderate chance for a 3*. Given how busy these dates are, $150 may unfortunately not be enough. It's certainly worth trying, though. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
greatdiehl2 Posted December 1, 2010 Author Report Posted December 1, 2010 my bid is for 150 per night plus taxes etc. Your opinion on 3 star versus 4 star?
thereuare Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 I doubt you have much of a chance for a 4* for this stay and only slightly have a chance at a 3.5* or 3*.We can suggest a strategy for whatever star level you decide you'd like to try for, but what is your game plan if not successful up to $150?If bidding less than 4*, is a 15 minute walk to the subway considered 'close enough' or is that too far? Would you be ok with the Hudson Hotel which has a good location but notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. greatdiehl2 Posted December 1, 2010 Author Report Posted December 1, 2010 We were hoping to be closer to the subway...could care less about the size of the room just want clean and safe. I will go look at the Hudson. What about the Aster on the Park?Did not get the $150 room and plan on going up 10 $175 this evening which is really as high as we can go.
thereuare Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 If you're bidding less than 4* and aren't willing to accept a 15 minute walk to the subway then i would exclude the MTE zone from your bidding (at the 4* level you should be ok).Let us know which star level you'd like to try for first and the zone(s) you're willing to accept and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. greatdiehl2 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Report Posted December 2, 2010 Hi, I was successful with a rate of $168 at the Courtyard at Marriott in Manhattan Upper East Side. 3 Star hotel not as close to the action as I was hoping nor as close to the subway but the reviews look good and we are just thrilled to work within our budget. What I learned about the process was to have a plan and to revisit the plan and make changes and hope something pops up!
AaronJB Posted December 2, 2010 Report Posted December 2, 2010 Thank you for the follow-up; sorry to hear that the location wasn't what you hoped, but glad to hear you'll be able to make it work for your travel plans.
