Priceline Hotel: 5 year anniversary surprise in NYC 12/16-12/19

Hey guys love the forum and seems like great advice. I could really use your help and will even be ready to donate to keep this site running. I'm taking my wife to see Prince at MSG for our 5 yr anniversary. I'd really like to get a 4-5 star hotel anywhere around MSG, Times Sq, etc...-not concerned with location as long as its close enough to MSG. I'd like to get it for as little as possible but willing to pay more for quality. We'll be there from Dec. 16 thru Dec 19 so 3 nights. I'm a newbie at this so could really use some guidance.

What would be your desired max budget per night? TS is generally the most expensive area; would other areas a bit further out be acceptable (MTE/MTW) if they were moderately less expensive than TS? For example, HOTWIRE is showing a 4* in MTE for $249 for these dates, but a 4* in TS for these dates on HOTWIRE is $309.
