renataufm Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 hi,i have been browsing the posts and wanted to make sure i understand the star rating and pricing for the waikoloa area. 1. hilton and marriott are both considered "resorts"2. these are the only "resorts" in the area typically found in the PL pool3. the only 4* in the area that area that would sell for that cheap in the hapuna (mauna lani is more expensive).4. hilo area is a free bid4. to try and get marriott using both resort and 4* options i should not bid more than $105-115 depending on the time of the year or i may end up at the hilton, or less than $95-90 i have a higher chance of ending up at the hapuna.5. any of those hotels have large rooms and children the age of mine (1 and 4 year old) are free in all of these properties, so i should not have a problem at checking if i get a room for two guests through priceline (since priceline does not have an option to add guests)are those assumptions correct?is it too risky to use 4* as free bid if i don't want the hapuna?i don't see any bids for april yet, should i just wait, and if not, what would be a safe start $?thanks for your help, renata.
thereuare Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 The Hilton and the Marriott are both resort rated by PRICELINE, but there are others too, and you need to be prepared to receive any hotel in the zone at the star rating (or higher) that you select... if you're not willing to accept any hotel in the zone then i wouldn't recommend using PRICELINE. If you decide to bid PRICELINE anyway, why mess around with 4* bidding and risk winning a hotel at that star level (which you apparently don't want).. you have 5 months to bid so why take unnecessary risks?I also wouldn't make the assumption that the hotel won't have any problem with your quad occupancy... while the hotel may have rooms which can accommodate quad occupancy, they may not be able, or willing, to provide you with such a room. Your agreement with PRICELINE and the hotel is for a room which can accommodate double occupancy, anything more than that at the discretion of the hotel and is a risk you have to be willing to accept if you choose to use PRICELINE. This risk is lower when the additional occupancy is for children rather than adults, but it's still a risk you'll need to accept if you decide to use PRICELINE.It appears that HOTWIRE may be a better option for you as you can often take a guess as to the hotel you may receive based upon the amenities associated with hotel offered (thus trying to target the one you want and/or avoiding the one you don't want) as well as being able to search for up to quad occupancy. HOTWIRE usually costs a little more than PRICELINE, but that's the trade-off between increasing the odds of getting what you need/want vs. receiving any hotel in the zone. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. renataufm Posted November 29, 2010 Author Report Posted November 29, 2010 So do you find anything of interest and within your budget when searching HOTWIRE (or based upon the above what is your gameplan moving forward?)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.we decided to look for condos instead as it seems it will give us a better bang for the bucks with the two kids... that is why i started the new thread, because i was changing gears and lowering the star rating, and type of accommodation completely, to get a bigger place. thanks for your continuing help!
thereuare Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread... if you ultimately use HOTWIRE we'll then move this thread to that section of the board and edit the topic title of this thread to reflect the details of your purchase. (otherwise users would have threads all over the board for the same stay, only one of them would be 'concluded' with the results, making LOTS of threads with no resolution, which makes the board less organized and useful for future readers)The Paniolo Greens Resort has previous been seen with the amenities above but at the 3.5* level... i'll speculate that is that this property has been downgraded to the 3* level and is my best guess for the Condo above. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases

renataufm Posted December 1, 2010 Author Report Posted December 1, 2010 thanks for the clarification on the posting on PRICELINE / HOTWIRE sides of the site. anyhow, we'll update this thread whenever we make a final decision.we decided to rent a 2br condo at the Keauhou Kona Surf And Racquet Club Resort through VRBO. the "spring special" rate we got is $90/nite for a total of $519 for 4 night with tax and cleaning included. the anounced price was $99/nite, but since we needed the exact 4 days the owner still had open in april he gave us an extra discount. this price is at least $30 less per day than any other condo in the same complex, so we got really lucky! this was the best deal we found for a place within walking distance to snorkeling or beach (the resort/condo complex itself does not have a beach).i am still trying for a car rental there on PRICELINE through the link on this site, and will let you know what i get.
thereuare Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Glad you found something that works for your needs this trip. Thanks for closing this thread with your decision. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
