jgontravel Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 Greetings, I have an interview in Vahalla on the 7th of Dec but will fly into NY on the 6th and depart on the 8th.Never been to NY so I wanted to check out the city. Any recommendations on where to stay? I'm getting myself ready to bid on priceline but still not sure what would suite me best.about me:-med student traveling with girlfriendobjectives:- easy access to trasportation (including grand central).- decent place to sleep (3*?), plan to be out and about most of the time.- best value possible without having to stay at a sketchy place.- really dont want to spend too much, but airline tix have been purchased and interview date is fixed.I would appreciate the help. thanks!

jgontravel Posted October 25, 2010 Author Report Posted October 25, 2010 ideally, 160 a night. max 240/night
thereuare Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Most midtown zones (MTE, MTW, CPS, TS, ESB, MSG and Chelsea) work well for the average user, but when bidding less than 4* there are a few caveats based upon some 'known' hotels in the area. However, take note of the following:CPS - contains the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small room, even by NYC standards. Would this be an acceptable outcome?MTE - some of the 3* and 3.5* hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway, would this be acceptable?Take a look at the zones at PRICELINE can confirm which one(s) you're willing to accept, taking note of the MTE and CPS information above... we'll then be able to suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. jgontravel Posted October 27, 2010 Author Report Posted October 27, 2010 i just need to win something, i tried 4* in MTW MTW CSP and TS at $225 with no luck
AaronJB Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 Unfortunately, I think there's a moderate chance that $240 will not be enough for a 4* for Midtown for these dates - I would proceed up to $240 and if not accepted, try again for 3.5* starting lower and working higher.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 HOTWIRE has what i believe to be the Embassy Suites for $212/nite... the downside of this hotel is the Downtown location (about a 20-25 minute subway ride to midtown) but for the right price it's certainly do-able. The hotel generally gets very good reviews (4.5/5.0 Tripadvisor rating) and offers an included breakfast as well as an evening manger's reception, both of which will help your budget a bit by not having to buy breakfast and/or a few drinks in the evening.Based upon current prices I'm guessing a 3.5* would still be near the upper end of your budget, so it comes down if you're willing to trade-off location for budget.Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. thereuare Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Thanks for the follow-up.If you're looking for some reasonably priced eats i like this place which is about a 10 minute walk from your hotel:Adrienne's Pizza Bar Restaurant54 Stone StNew York, NY 10004-2617(212) 248-3838Get the 'square' pie which is very reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients used... drinks are a little pricey at ~$7 for a draft beer and wines starting at ~$8/glass (both typical for NYC but still pads a bit quite quickly)Enjoy your stay.
