Hotwire Hotel: 4* MTC $229 11/17/10-11/21/10

So I've done my research on this site and attempted to bid on a 4* in NYC using the bidding techniques listed on this site. I started with MTW at $160 and went all the way up to $210 eventually including most of the different areas. The reason I went with this price range is because I read in other threads that people were getting the W hotel around that time for around that price. More specifically I saw 11/11-11/15 for $180. Also I saw on hotwire that there is a 4* in the Midtown Central area (with mixed reviews) for $229. (...and I cant figure out which hotel that is on hotwire for the life of me... I've tried to do the TripAdvisor research and whatnot...)

Am I going about this the right way? Am I way off base with my prices? If so I'm assuming its because my dates are so close to Thanksgiving.

Anyway, I'm trying to find a 4* in the $200 ballpark. I'd like to stay as close to Time Square or GC as possible. I'm hosting someone from overseas who's never been to the states before and I'd really like them to get the big city experience. I'd prefer a 4* but if I absolutely have to I suppose I could drop to a 3.5* if it meets the price range... any ideas or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your help! :) this site has already proven very helpful

I cant figure this one out for the life of me...

4* Midtown Central area hotel

$229/Night 11/17/10 - 11/21/10 (was $226 this morning)

Amenities: Fitness Center, Restaurants, Business Center, High Speed Internet

Recommended in 30% of customer reviews (pretty low, right? :))

3.5 on trip advisor with 40+ reviews

any ideas? best guesses? Thanks!

I'd like to stay as close to Times Square and Grand Central as possible so MTE, MTW, TS/TD are all acceptable. I would be willing to stay in CPS, SoHo, or Chelsea if it meant getting a 4* at a decent price. But if none of that is possible, I would settle for a 3* in MTE, MTW, or TS/TD.

Thanks for the help!!!!

In terms of lowering to a 3.5*, there are quite a few nice 3.5*'s, but of note:

1. The Hudson in the CPS zone is a 3.5* with infamously small rooms.

2. The Millennium UN and Hilton Manhattan East in MTE are quite a bit East in the Midtown East zone.

Would these be acceptable?

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Millenium UN and Hilton look good, but I'd prefer to stay away from the Hudson! At this point should I go for the 4* with mixed reviews on hotwire for $229 (probably Park Central) or take my chances with something on PRICELINE and possibly get a better hotel at 3.5*? What do you think my chances are on PRICELINE? I haven't had a chance to check the forums and see what people are getting lately...

The Hudson hotel hasn't been reported to the board via HOTWIRE in over 6 months, so i would have some reservations regarding the 4* MTC property in case that property has been upgraded to since last reported at the 3.5* level (and regardless of what it is, the 30% recommended by HOTWIRE users would be enough to keep me away)

I would sooner try for something at the 3.5* level via PRICELINE (not including the CPS zone)

At the 3.5* MTE, MTW, TS, ESB, and MSG usually work well for the average user (left out CPS due to your desire to avoid the Hudson)... let us know which of these zone(s) you're willing to accept and your maximum bid and we'll advise accordingly.

MTE, MTW, TS are preferred, but ESB and MSG will do to meet my price range.

Does this mean you want to bid the first three zones first up to your limit before adding the other two zones... or the least expensive in any of these zone is the objective?

I would prefer bidding to the max in my first three zones, then if that doesnt work getting the least expensive 3.5* in any of the zones.
