Newbie user looking for assistance/strategy for 3 night New York from Nov 1 to Nov 4 ...

Would like a 4 star hotel in either of Mid-town East, Mid-town West, Times Square or Central Park South.

Want to spend no more than $160 per night.

What would be the ideal bidding strategy ?

Just before posting here, I tried going for $120 in the Times Square area and that was a no go, I want to build a good strategy to get the rooms for my parents.

Thanks in Advance.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

When you bid $120 in the Times Square zone was that for a 4*, 3.5* or 3* property? Are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better?

i bid 120 for a 4*, it was just a trial bid since i was looking to get a feel of how this works.

i would like to stay under 150 and the goal is actually the best deal for the bucks here and close to the touristy location / subway so that parents don't have to walk around a lot.

Are you looking to spend $160 + taxes/fees max or $160 "all-in" (taxes/fees included?)

Unfortunately, Winter in NYC is quite busy and rates are high - given the rates I'm seeing, I'm guessing a Midtown (although it depends on which zone you are looking to bid for) 4* would likely take as much as a $250-300 bid.

You may be able to get a 3.5* bid for $160 accepted, but the 3.5*'s in MTE include a couple of properties - the Hilton Manhattan East and Millennium UN - that are far East in MTE, and the Hudson in CPS (which offers very small rooms.)

What zones would you find acceptable?

... close to the touristy location / subway...
i would prefer the following zones MTE/MTW/CPS/TimesSquare

As noted above some of the 3.5* and lower rated hotels in the MTE zone can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway... would this be acceptable?

no go ... rejected on each and every bid....

what do you think is the a more plausible price here ? i see a lot of people on the board have been successful with 150 for 3.5* but their stay length is either 1-night or 2-night at max. Do you think it affects my chances given that I am looking for a 3-night stay ?

Should I split up my trip into a 1-night and 2-night trip ?

Rates differ (often substantially, in cities like NYC) from day-to-day; these unfortunately may be busier dates. These dates on Expedia look mostly similar in terms of price, although Wednesday night is somewhat more expensive at some properties.

Based on the rates I'm seeing at 3.5* properties and HOTWIRE rates, I'm guessing that a 3.5* acceptable bid may be in the $175-200 range for these dates. I'd keep working up higher by $5's ($150, $155, etc) towards that level and hopefully a bid will be accepted within that range.

bid acceptance / rejection seems strange to me .. another user of this forum got a super cheap deal in MTE, link: Priceline NYC

i would expect a weekday to be cheaper than a weekend, but it seems to be the other way around.

i will try to work it up to 175, but hope to get a better deal just like the user above. I have an alert on multiple websites to see if the prices drop so that i can bid at the right moment.

It's more a case-by-case basis than weekend/weekday; one weekend can be dirt cheap, the next can be extremely expensive.

Thank you for keeping us updated and good luck for your next round of bidding.

Rates do very from day to day, but generally speaking, in NYC weekdays are usually more expensive then weekends as weekdays have both business and leisure travelers, whereas weekends are mostly leisure travelers.
