marymiss65 Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 we are looking for a hotel in nyc for 11/11 through 11/14. I'm looking at the 3.5 affinia shelburne in esb area and affinia manhattan in msg area. is there a chance of getting these hotels for $110. I'm assuming these are the only 3.5 hotels in those areas. If not what is a decent bid?
Romelle Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 While the two Affinias are the only two 3.5* hotels members have reported here, it really isn't safe to assume you would get one of those if you bid those two areas. Hotel star levels change every once in a while, and hotels are reported for the first time here fairly often. I've personally twice gotten hotels not previously reported, in fairly heavily reported cities. There are various loose rules of thumb about "decent bids", but one really just never knows until one bids. 10-15% under HOTWIRE is one guesstimate. Half of rack rate (hotel web site rates) is another. Rates are very date specific. And the PRICELINE availability can change. You've got quite a bit of time. If you start fairly low and work up gradually, you will be assured you've found a good deal. Also, don't get in a hurry to get to your max as some cities seem to offer the better deals only in the last few weeks or even days. It is well worth your time to do a bit of homework, checking the rack rates and the retail offerings from the different general vendors such as are found under the Support/Travel Links tab above (Travelocity, Expedia, etc.). I've personally twice gotten hotels not previously reported, in fairly heavily reported cities.Besides the reasons mentioned above, the star rating you select is the minimum you're willing to accept... PRICELINE will always attempt to upgrade you to a higher rated hotel if there is a hotel at a higher star rating willing to accept your bid. With this noted, you're budget is probably not realistic for these dates... bids around the $100 area are really only seen during times of very low occupancy... and this time of year is high season for NYC. You're certainly welcomed to try, but is this an option trip which you simply won't take if it's not cheap enough... or are you committed to this trip and looking for the best price you can get? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. marymiss65 Posted November 6, 2010 Author Report Posted November 6, 2010 I'm going to nyc for dates 11/13 and 11/14. I'm interested in a 4 star hotel in ts, msg or esb, possibly a 3.5. I would like to pay about 200. Do you think it is ok. I have the kitano for 11/11 and possibly would like the affinia dumont. any help would be appreciated
AaronJB Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 There is no way to ensure a particular property, such as the Affinia. You may be able to squeak by to get a 4* for $200 in TS for these dates; if $200 is not accepted, it will take not much further than that. I would start at $175 and work higher by $5's. My guess for a 4* in ESB is that it will possibly take $175-200, and possibly a bit higher. There is only one "known" 3.5* MSG, the Affinia Manhattan - is that a hotel you would be interested in? Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
