Hotwire Hotel: New York Location?

I am visiting New York with some relatives on 10/01-10/03 and advise on best location to stay. I will be mostly taking tours from Empire state building and visiting some places. I plan to have a rental car and park it in downtown.

I would like to stick with budget of 150$ per night including tax if possible so need some recommendations as downtown may not be possible at all in this range and will have to stay in other locations. Hotwire shows places near LGA or JFK in this price range with 3 star hotels but not sure of these areas and I do not know enough about other places except airports or Jersey City.

Any help highly appreciated..

Few questions/comments:

I am visiting New York with some relatives...
How many rooms do you need and how many guests will you be?
I plan to have a rental car and park it in downtown.
Are you driving in from some other area... as you really don't need/want a rental car in this area unless you're planning a day trip (and even then just rent the car for the day)

Your budget will not likely be enough for Manhattan, but where are you traveling in from (and how will you be arraving... car, plane (which airport), bus, train, etc)

Thanks for responding. I just need one room with 3 adults. I am driving from Washington DC so will be having a rental car already.

Also my actual dates in NY are 10/1-10/3 and somehow typed in wrong dates in last post.

If your renting the car 'one way' (picking up in one location and dropping of in another) it can get very expensive. Since you won't really need the rental (imo) in NYC (and possibly not even in DC) you may want to look into options where you only rent the car for the day(s) you need it and take other options to travel to NYC from DC (Amtrak, MegaBus, BoltBus, Fly, Greyhound, etc)... DC/NYC travel can be very inexpensive.

Since you need triple occupancy i don't think PRICELINE is a good option since they only guarantee double occupancy, which means you could receive a room with only one bed. HOTWIRE allows you to search for up to quad occupancy... if you search HOTWIRE for triple occupancy does anything appear within your budget?
