Hey there people,

Need a bit of help as I'm a bit overwhelmed as where to start in getting a bargain in new york for our hols in Feburary next year.

I'm looking for something pretty decent like a 4* or 5* for 5 nights. Ideally I'd like to stay at the soho grand or the tribeca but other good hotels would be cool.... I understand that priceline removes the luxury of choice but an idea of whether you can get these on priceline would be cool.

My budget is a maximum of $250/night but might be able to stretch to a bit more if I need to.

Can you please suggest a good strategy?

Thanks a million guys!

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

PRICELINE does not offer 5* bidding in NYC, but there are plenty of participating 4* properties - some properties do appear as wins more commonly than others. There are many possibilities, so one really does have to be willing to accept what hotel may appear. With HOTWIRE, one can make an educated guess as to which hotels may be showing, but only one hotel shows in each area at each star rating for each set of dates.

This is traditionally a slow period in NYC and prices are towards the low end. If you used PRICELINE or HOTWIRE, you could certainly come in lower than your desired max budget. However, there are some 4* properties within your budget regular rate, such as the Muse ($203, Expedia.)

Which zones would you be interested in bidding for/staying in?

js1401,

Please start by reading your messages.

I'll just add to the above that if you are flexible and/or care about cost, your budget is probably waaay too much for this time of year. If you're willing to bid for the least expensive 4* or better in midtown you can probably do so for ~$125-$150/nite. While you only mention the Soho area above, thought i'd mention rates in midtown too as often the savings are worth adjusting to a nearby zone which you might not have otherwise considered.

The reason I suggested Soho is that it has been an area that is recommended to us for good places to eat and drink - it was described as a cool part of town! We haven't been before - hence the indecision!

We are open minded where we stay (in terms of area) but I'm just keen to get a very nice hotel as it is a suprise trip for my girlfriends birthday. Having said that the tribeca and soho grand really appeal to me and I'm sure they will to my girlfriend.

If we didn't get the tribeca or soho grand is downtown / soho / financial district still a good place to stay?

HOTWIRE doesn't have much inventory at the 4* level for these dates - possibly a bit too far in advance at this point. In terms of boutique properties, I think the Muse ($203, Expedia), Affinia 50 ($179. Expedia), 70 Park Avenue ($186, Expedia.)

In terms of areas to bid for - Midtown East and Empire State Building are very nice areas and tend to be the more reasonable Mditown zones. However, it depends on what you are looking for - are you looking for nightlife, to be close to tourist spots, etc? In terms of Soho, if you bid for the Downtown-Soho-Financial District, you could possibly get a hotel anywhere in that area, and that can be pretty far South/out of the way.
