phi208 Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 Hi everyone,As always this forum has been great in helping me with bidding for hotels. I'm now trying to venture into the car rentals as well and was wondering what a general price range for bidding on cars is? I'm more specifically looking for luxury or convertible for pick up and drop off at LAX from 10/20 - 10/25. Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't mind spending $300 on a car rental for the week if it was a luxury or convertible, but would never want to pay that for an economy or compact. I've had previous deals in the past from Alamo where I was able to get a rate of $10 a day but seems like they stopped having that promotion. Thanks for your help as always!
phi208 Posted September 14, 2010 Author Report Posted September 14, 2010 I'm sorry I've decided on a category hehe...sorry for the confusion. After seeing some of the forum posts for winning bids in the LAX rental car area I've decided that a convertible would be doable. I've noticed that it would be cheaper to pickup on 10/21 at noon as opposed to late 10/20 (late at night, when my flight arrives). I get hit with the weekly rate for only an extra 12 hours. I'd rather go back on the 21st around noon and save me the $$ since I wont be far from LAX. Its crazy how much the price jumps from daily versus weekly totals. So far I've found that Enterprise has a rate of $45/day and $237 total for 10/21 - 10/25. Also, it seems that people are winning bids on PRICELINE from anywhere between $22-$45. Thereuare, do you recommend I go direct or do you think I'd get a better deal on PL or HW? I'm trying to look for coupon codes too but can't seem to find any hehe. Thanks for your help!
thereuare Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 As car rental rates are almost always fully refundable (often don't even require a credit card to reserve) i'd find the best deal you can, confirm it's refundable and book it, then continue to use PRICELINE / HOTWIRE in an effort to better the deal between now and your arrival. Nothing to lose... money to gain :)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. (or our Enterprise link, or any of the other rental car links in our support page, if you go that route) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
phi208 Posted September 15, 2010 Author Report Posted September 15, 2010 Sounds like a plan, thanks for the tips as always! :)
phi208 Posted September 17, 2010 Author Report Posted September 17, 2010 Your Offer Price: $20.00 (per day)Total Rental Days: 4 daysSubtotal: $80.00Taxes and Fees: $42.51Total Charges: $122.51Lowest Published Price: $205.56Total Savings:* $83.05 (You saved 40%)Wasn't what I originally wanted, but the convertible price wasn't working for me. Bid 20,22,25 with no success so bid 20 on standard and won it.P.S. Priceline kills you on fees...wow
thereuare Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Thank you for sharing your win with the board... can you please add a reply to this thread with the name of the rental car company which accepted your bid price so we can add this information to the topic title. While PRICELINE does get their booking fee, the high amount it likely due to car rental taxes at the airport... they're an easy target for revenue which local voters usually have no problems passing since most locals will likely never rent a car from the aiprort... thereby having tourists and business travelers pay for whatever improvements are on slate. (granted most of the taxes go towards improving the airport, but an argument can be made that this trickles down to the local economy and local businesses and residents benefit)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. phi208 Posted September 20, 2010 Author Report Posted September 20, 2010 Sorry thereuare, the company was Hertz. :) Also, the dates are for 4 days from 10/21/10 - 10/25/10. Yeah I figured the fees were a combination of fees/taxes...as if we don't pay enough in taxes already but that's a whole other topic hehe. I'll just have to remember to add around $10 to the "per day" bid on PRICELINE to come up with the actual cost per day of renting a car. As always, made sure to use the PRICELINE link provided here on the forum. Thanks again!
thereuare Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Thanks for the follow-up and thanks for using the PRICELINE links on the board to begin your bidding!Have a good trip!
