Hi all,

I'm completely new here, so apologies in advance. I read the "read before posting" and "getting started," so hopefully I didn't miss anything.

I'm looking book a hotel in Chelsea or Greenwich Village in New York City from Thurs., Sept 9th through Mon., Sept 13th. (Meatpacking District or Hells Kitchen would be ok too.) Ideally, we're shooting for a three-star hotel. I'm traveling with one of my best friends, so we need two beds. We tried offering $200 - $225 a night, but I guess that's just too low? The listed median for three stars was listed at $300/night. What do you recommend on bidding?

If you recommend HOTWIRE for specific neighborhoods, I'm open to that too. I've only tried PRICELINE so far. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

I have an awesome recommendation that I love in Chelsea - it has a weird name but it is the Desmond Tutu Center, and the rooms are great, it is inexpensive for new york, and right in Chelsea. It is in a beautiful historic building that happens to also house the oldest Seminary in the country but you are completely separate from that at the hotel. I guess Tutu donated the money for the seminary to open the hotel, which in their prime real estate location is the only way they can stay where they are. I paid $133 one night for a great room, and 300 one night for a suite. I am sure you could get a room with two beds for around 200. It is a true new york experience (i grew up there, so I feel i can say this!)

You're not going to be able to assure this, especially in NYC, when using PRICELINE... all that is guarnateed is a room which will accommodate double occupancy. After that it's up to the hotel, and given general small room sizes, many NYC rooms only have one bed, and often rooms with 2 beds are considered an upgrade. You could search HOTWIRE for more than double occupancy which should give you separate sleeping accommodations (although the second 'bed' could be a rollaway, pullout sofabed, etc) but will likely increase the price. If you search HOTWIRE for triple occupancy (try 2adults/1child in hopes of keeping the price low and give you 3 people in the room) does anything appear within your budget?

Given the HOTWIRE prices you're seeing for triple occpuancy, and the fact that requiring 2 beds makes PRICELINE not an option, is two beds more of a want or a need?

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

PS- what i beliee to be the Holdiday Inn Midtown on 57th St appears to be available for more than double occupancy at $225/nite... is this of interest?

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

PRICELINE is not recommended for those who need two beds in NYC; the service only guarantees 1 bed, and that is especially true in NYC, where rooms are often quite small and rooms with two beds are limited. HOTWIRE guarantees bedding for the amount of people in the party; if 2 are indicated, then one bed is likely; if more than 2 are indicated, then more than one bed should be provided, but that could be 2 beds or 1 + sofabed or other combination. Unfortunately, when selecting more than 2 adults on HOTWIRE options generally become more limited (if you indicate 2 adults/2 children, extra person fees will less likely be added in.)

All that said, I think a good option (while not exactly where you were looking to stay, but not too terribly far away) may be the 4* Hotel Chandler - $245 on Expedia for a room with 2 double beds, and coupon code RELAX10 takes $10 off each night = $235. This property gets extremely good reviews on tripadvisor - 4.5/5 91% recommended.

I'm also - when searching for 2 adults/2 children - seeing a 3.5* in Chelsea for $252 w/restaurant, fitness, internet (possibly the Doubletree or Ramada Plaza) and a few other possibilities in other Midtown areas.

I think the Chandler deal stands out in that you can select a room w/2 beds and the reviews are awfully good, but there are a few HOTWIRE options in the $225-250 range around Midtown - please let us know if you would like us to try to ID the other Midtown options and we would be happy to help.

Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE or Expedia links to start your purchases and searches.
