mdtringwood Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Hey, this is my first post and I'm happy to contribute because this website is such a great idea. So I tried Priceline for my first time last week, I was looking at the Virginia Beach area (the main strip) and I noticed that Priceline has a link that shows you previous bids that won in a particular area. I saw a successful $100/night bid for a 2.5 star that occurred about two weeks before my expected stay so that's exactly what I tried and I won. I placed the bid on August 13th for a two night stay that started on August 15th and we were given the La Quinta Inn that was located on Pacific Avenue and 28th Street. At first, I was given two double beds so I tried calling the both the hotel and Priceline to try to get a king room with no luck. While I was checking in, I decided to call Priceline one more time in hopes of getting a king (yes, I know, Priceline states that if you want any special accomidations, you must contact the hotel directly but La Quinta will tell you to call Priceline) and I was able to get the king which was nice. When my girlfriend and I checked in, we were pleasantly surprised with everything. The entire staff was nice, the room was great (very clean, comfortable bed and sheets, nice flooring, flatscreen tv [with video output so if you're someone that travels with a universal remote, you can operate your gaming system or DVD player]), tasty complimentary breakfast (waffel makers, yogurt, cereals, etc.), fast/free wireless internet, and a very short walk to the beach. So if you plan on booking VA Beach soon, try a similar bid and hope you get this hotel because besides Marriot's Springhill Suites (which is much more expensive), this has to be the best 2.5* on the beach. Other hotels I've stayed at in VA Beach was the Ramada (not the one on the beach, the one on 31st/32nd street), Springhill Suites, and the Oceanfront Inn (also nice, but I must say that La Quinta is better). Now for quick restaurant reviews. We ate at Catch 31 for lunch (look for a buy one get one half off coupon if you eat between 2 and 4pm) and Mahi Mah's and Rockafeller's for dinner. Even though Catch 31 and Mahi Mah's are in the same chain, we had a great experience at Catch 31 and a horrible one at Mahi Mah's. The atmosphere and service is much better at Catch 31 than at Mahi Mah's, our waiter at Mahi Mah's got our order wrong (asked for a fried platter, got broiled) but I can't really blame him because the place is so loud. The tuna steak that came with the meal had a translucent purple center, so probably not even cooked up to rare (the waiter didn't ask what temperature I wanted but I always thought medium by default) but we still ate it. I've eaten at Mahi Mah's a couple of times before this trip and none of the times were that spectactular so now I'm certain that I will never return, I don't care how high it's rated on Tripadvisor.com. Rockafeller's was great, we got a special called "Char-crusted Yellow Fin Tuna" and it was cooked just right, very delicious. The fried calamari appatizer wasn't the best but good enough, the crab cake was tasty, very nice/fast service.
