SouthernBidder Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Hello, My wife and I need to be near Hospital for Special Surgery for the nights 8/30-9/7. Would like 3.5 stars or higher fairly near the hospital (i.e short cab trip). On Hotwire, Central Park 2 stars is $154/night. On Priceline retail, there is Hudson, A Morton's Original 3.5 star for $240 incl. breakfast and Superior Queen. Amenities are not that important, but would like a quiet location, generous sized room, and cleanliness. Thank you for your assitance.
SouthernBidder Posted August 18, 2010 Author Report Posted August 18, 2010 I should add that the hospital is located in upper east side on 70th Street. Being within 15-18 blocks would be fine. Thanks in advance.
AaronJB Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Sorry to hear about your upcoming surgery. :)My concern with 2* properties in NYC is that they can vary very significantly in terms of quality and may run into other problems (possible shared bathrooms.) The Hudson would be well-located, but that hotel offers quite small rooms (rooms in NYC in general are often quite small, although the Hudson rooms are smaller than average.) The Helmsley Carlton House is more expensive at $289 via Expedia.com (coupon code RELAX10 takes $10 off per night - $279), but that would be pretty close to where you need to be, and that would be a larger junior suite w/kitchen. There's also an apartment rental on Expedia called 254 East Vacation for $223 for a 1BR Suite (RELAX10 takes $10 off per night here, as well.). Apartment rentals in NYC are generally NOT recommended and are a risk. However, this one actually gets some pretty decent reviews. I'd still say it's a risk, but it would be VERY close to where you need to be (on the map, it looks about 6-7 blocks). Definitely ake a look at the reviews on Expedia and tripadvisor before deciding on this one.If you are still interestedi n the Hudson, a regular room is $220 on Travelocity. You could also bid on PRICELINE for UES or CPS/UWS if possibly staying anywhere in those zones is acceptable. Let us know if you are interested in going this route. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE or Expedia or Travelocity links to start your purchases and searches.
SouthernBidder Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 Aaron, Thanks so much for your help. I will definitely look into your suggestions! Yes, I would be interested in bidding on Priceline for UES > CPS > UWS, all would be acceptable at the right price (say $200 for 3 star or higher). I understand to use the link here, so I shall do that. I am a little wary however of CPS on Priceline, as I have researched the "Bidding History" section and note that winning bids for CPS around that time involve Renaissance 57 which apparently only gives Priceline bidders a double bed (gleaned through TripAdvisor comments) or Hudson which as you mention is very small. So I may bid only for UES and perhaps UWS. I haven't seen any history of bids for those zones yet. Any ideas what hotels would be involved? Thanks again.
thereuare Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 You can see all hotels reported to the board in this Priceline Hotel List for the area.Once you review the list please confirm the zone(s) you're willing to bid as well as the minimum star rating and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. SouthernBidder Posted August 19, 2010 Author Report Posted August 19, 2010 Priceline winning bid: $170/night (before fees/taxes) for Hudson arr. 8/30, dep. 9/3 (considered 3.5* CPS). Did not have success for this bid in the UES. Hopefully I can get a decent size room/bed there as the trip advisor reviews are brutal...
AaronJB Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Congrats on your success. :)Nice rate for this well-located and unique boutique property. This isn't the most busy time of year for NYC hotels, so I would recommend trying to write to the hotel in regards to your stay and the reason for your stay and try to see if you can work something out for a slightly larger room. This is only for part of your desired stay, so if the Hudson doesn't work out quite the way you hoped, you would at least be moving somewhere else for the remainder if you choose to go another route. If you do need help for the other part of your stay, please start a new thread and we would be happy to help.Keep in mind with the Hudson reviews is that the property's trendy/boutique style may not be everyone's cup-of-tea, and that many of those reviews are by those who paid full price.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
