I am trying to find a single room in Chicago for Wednesday September 15 and checking out the 16th.

I have bid up to $130 with no luck so far.

Any ideas? I usually don't have this much trouble for Chicago. I can't see anything going on during those days, unless I'm missing something.

Thanks

The prices that I'm seeing for these dates are "convention level" - definitely on the high side on HOTWIRE and regular rate. The issue is a large convention -

IMTS 2010 Industry & Technology Conference McCormick Place 9/13/2010 9/18/2010 80,000

What would be your desired max budget per night for this stay? Unfortunately, with 4*'s showing at $300-400, I think this may take a pretty high bid to be successful for a 4* (and probably in general) for these dates.

The info I got still shows crazy higher than normal prices...

I wonder if there is a point when the blocks on these rooms might open up, and prices will get better?

Here is what I'm seeing - a few of these are grayed out...

North Michigan Avenue - Water Tower - Gold Coast area hotel $239

Magnificent Mile Area - Streeterville area hotel - $269

North Michigan Avenue - Water Tower - Gold Coast area hotel $239 powered by Hotels.com

Chicago Loop area hotel - $269

North Michigan Avenue - Water Tower - Gold Coast area hotel $202

Some higher prices stuff in the $400 dollar range...

You can check the conference referenced above to see when the last day attendees have to book their rooms as that would be the point, or a few days later, when any blocks previously held would be released. HOWEVER, rates can go even higher if hotels are filled up due to the convention, and with 80K people coming to the city (even if the conference is lightly attended and only 60K register and attend), rates may still be high as that is certainly enough demand to effect prices. As well, hotels know that there will always be a few 'stragglers' who never got around to booking their conference ticket or decide at the last minute to attend, and if only have a few rooms left will likely hold onto them in hopes of landing a last minute/walk-in customer (who will pay top dollar) then giving the rooms to the opaque suppliers to sell at a deep discount.

Have now bid as high as $175 via priceline on NMA and LOOP for 4 starts and been denied.

Not sure what my next play is going to be here...

Might as well just bite the bullet and book a room at Trump.. :)

There is another option..... The conference above is showing the Hotel Allegro for $199 - I could just try and book through the conference as a guest... with 90 thousand people, think they'd catch on?

Sorry to hear that your bids weren't accepted. :) Unfortunately, I think you may be looking at as much as $200+ for these dates for a 4* in either zone, although I'd work up to that point instead of jumping to it.

If you're driving, the suburbs would be quite a bit cheaper, although it may not be worth it for only 1 night.

Unfortunately, I don't think booking through the conference is likely to work. Travelocity does have a 4* in the Millennium Park/River North/NMA area for $234, as well.
