KRXNLS Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 My husband and I are arriving in New York Friday June 17th and staying 5 nights. This is our first visit to NY (very exciting!) but to keep the hotel costs down a bit we think we will try for Manhatten for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and try for New Jersey for Monday and Tuesday. Any comments on this plan would be much appreciated.I wonder if we should try Priceline for NJ fist and then Manhatten or the other way around. Also our first preference in New Jersey would be the Hyatt, of course, and reading through posts here it seems to me that there is a price limit I shouldn't go over to have the best chance of getting where we want. If I am correct could you please give me an idea of how to bid there.(And a really dumb question from someone who knows nothing about the area at all - on Priceleine NJ site, do I bid Jersey City?)As far as Manhatten goes, we would like a 4 star and any zone would be OK although I'm a bit concerned about MTW because of some quite negative reviews I've read on the Hilton with respect to Priceline rooms. We hoped to keep our Manhatten bids to 150 or less but don't know if that's reasonable. We don't, as yet, have a back up but this early I thought we could try for Priceline first. Thanks for this site and all the help you give
thereuare Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Early look indicates that you're going to have to do the NJ side of the stay at the latter half of your trip. A 4* in NYC will likley cost you closer to $200 than $150, so i don't know if you'd want to have 3 days on the NJ side rather than two days.Let us know your thoughts and we'll delve in deeper. KRXNLS Posted March 15, 2005 Author Report Posted March 15, 2005 $200 is a bit of a shock. I had checked a few rates and most were very high but the Hilton in MTW (the one I'm a bit wary about! )shows some rates of $236 which seems comparable to posted rates at times when an occasional bid has been won for $110 or $120 so I wouldn't mind trying that first in order to go for 3 nights in Manhatten followed by 2 in NJ.If necessary, we would go for the 3 nights in New Jersey but we would like to try Manhatten for the 3nights first and could reach a bit higher than $150 especially if we do fairly well in NJ.Prices seem high on the opaque services, so I wonder if it would be best to wait a while. Hotwire, however, seems to have the Hyatt NJ?? for $85. Would you say that's a good rate? Thanks
thereuare Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I only gave it a once and was concentrating more on how to split the stay than actual bid prices, but let's try the NYC side of things first. I've stuck to the 'traditional' tourist areas of MTE, MTW, and UM/CPS...You have two re-bid zones when bidding 4* in NYC, if you're unsure of which ones they are feel free to ask for help and/or confirm them with the board.Select 4* MTEBid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTWBid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPSBid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPSBid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and UM/CPSBid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and UM/CPSBid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone1 and...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone2 and...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. KRXNLS Posted March 15, 2005 Author Report Posted March 15, 2005 SUCCESS!Following your strategy,(and bidding each time through Savings Barn. com) Thereuare, we won the Hilton New York for $110 for the nights of Friday, Saturday and Sunday - June 17th, 18th and 19th.We are delighted with this price, of course, and keeping our fingers crossed that the porr reviews were written by extra fussy people!Do you think I should try the other 2 nights for NJ now? Could you please advise on how to bid there. Thanks again
thereuare Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Congratulations on your win (glad my first impression was incorrect on the price... but that's why we alway start as low as possible and work our way up). Please start a new thread in the NJ Forum for the remainder of your stay and we'll reply to you there. As always, thank you for using the links at SavingsBarn.com Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
