Hi All,

I'm going to NYC from 8-15 August and looking for a hotel that will make travelling to/from Columbia University easy (I have a conference there). I'm not familiar with getting to/from Columbia as my trips to NYC have been more touristy.

While I am at my conference, my wife will be sightseeing. I've read that searching the Upper West Side can be tricky as it goes pretty far North (as my wife will be on her own, I want to be in a location she feels safe).

Does anybody have recommendations on areas that are good to search on with Priceline. In addition, what can I expect for a price during these dates (Expedia still has fairly high prices compared to past trips to NYC).

Thanks,

Good morning, and Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

What would be your desired budget per night for hotel?

To offer one regular rate suggestion (a hotel that has not yet been reported on PRICELINE or HOTWIRE), the 4.5* Jumierah Essex House is $243.75 (on sale) via Expedia, and coupon code 10SPRING takes another $10 off - $233.75. This property is right at the South border of Central Park; it would still be a bit of a trek up to Columbia, but would also be a reasonable distance to Midtown sights and in a terrific location. You could take the subway from this location up towards Columbia.

In terms of regular rate Upper West Side, the On the Ave is $211 regular rate and the coupon also works for this property, as well. The other commonly seen property in the UWS - the Empire - does not appear to be available for your entire stay.

In terms of PRICELINE, would your acceptable zones be Upper West/Upper East and Central Park South, or are there other zones that would be of interest?

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE or Expedia links to start your purchases and searches.

Hello,

Thanks for your quick reply, it is appreciated.

Ideally I'd like to spend $150 - $225, and would go to the top of the budget for a nice hotel that my wife would enjoy. Location is secondary to a pleasant hotel.

I think the Priceline Zones you've indicated are good, however I'd also be interested in Midtown West and Times Square (I see the #1 subway goes through here and to Columbia). Is it reasonable to find a 4* deluxe room on Priceline in those areas on my dates within my budget? Also, which are the likely hotels that I would win from?

Many thanks,

Richard.

Assuming you're commuting to Columbia via Subway, i would think the following zones would suit your needs:

UWS (at the 4* level you aren't likely to end up too far north)

MTW (most of it... depending upon hotel recieved you may need to walk just a bit to the subway... but not too far)

Times Square

MSG-Convention Center

Chelsea

However, only the first 3 zones above currently have 4* hotels... MSG-Convention Center has 3.5* as the highest while Chelsea tops at 3*.

I think your budget should be reasonable, and i saw what i believe to be the Westin (or possibly it's the W Times Square) for $255/nite... so you should be able to get a 4* via PRICELINE for a little less... and other zones likely less than this.

Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly.
