Bidding strategy - undesirable hotels

I often find that in a particular geographical area, there is at least one hotel in a Priceline star category that is a real clunker. (Say, for instance, the Red Lion at the Portland airport.) The likelihood that I will end up with the Red Lion makes me reluctant to bid in the 3* category at all.

However, I note that at present, the Red Lion is listed on Priceline's regular (non-bidding) page for $75 per night. I was wondering what would happen if I were to bid $76 for a 3* on the opaque portion of the site. I would, of course, be irritated to the max if I still ended up with the Red Lion!

I would not recommend overbidding to get a particular property, as there is the possibility you could end up with the Red Lion.

It's fairly rare, but I have seen the occasional report of a win for more than the hotel is offering and have then suggested trying to get the Best Price Guarantee from PRICELINE.

Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
