littleJ Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Hi everyone,I'm a newbie at this whole priceline bidding thing. I've been reading the other topics, but I wonder if you guys can help me. I currently have a reservation at the On The Ave hotel, which is a 3* on the Upper West Side for 09/01 - 09/10, with an average daily rate of US$160. I was wondering if you guys think that I could get something cheaper than that, preferably on CPS, MTW, TS or MSG.Thanks,
thereuare Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Welcome to BetterBidding! It will be close as to whether you can beat that rate. If you'd like to give it a try, let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow (ie- you're bidding CPS so i assume you're ok with the small rooms at the Hudson? You've left out MTE is that due to the location of the Millenium UN? What about the Chelsea and/or ESB zone?)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... and click this PRICELINE link before replying. littleJ Posted July 14, 2010 Author Report Posted July 14, 2010 Hi thereuare,Thanks for the quick reply. I am willing to give it a try for a room at CPS, MTW, TS, MSG and ESB. I think I'd like to try first for a 3* up to US$150, and if that doesn't work, I can try a 2.5* for up to US$120. If nothing works, I'll just keep my reservation at the OTA. I didn't include MTE because I want a hotel close to the subway, and I've read in other posts that the Millenium UN is a bit far. I don't mind staying in a small room like the ones in Hudson. Thanks,
nepean19 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 We just got the Grand Hyatt in Midtown East for $135 for 7/26-7/27 which is a 4 star. I seemed to have better luck late at night with my bids. See my winning priceline bid.
littleJ Posted July 16, 2010 Author Report Posted July 16, 2010 Just found out that you need an american or canadian credit card to use "name your own price". Guess I'll just keep my back-up reservation, since Hotwire's prices are a bit too high. Thanks for the help, anyway.
Calder Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 International credit cards work just fine. I`m from Finland, and my mastercard was accepted without any problems.
littleJ Posted July 16, 2010 Author Report Posted July 16, 2010 But on the address form the only countries listed are USA and Canada. What should I do?
yellowdog Posted July 16, 2010 Report Posted July 16, 2010 littleJThis link will solve your problem: Priceline Non-US BiddersPlease use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Yellowdog.
littleJ Posted July 17, 2010 Author Report Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks for your help with the credit card.I've used the PRICELINE links on the forum and bid for a 3* up to US$130 plus a US$5 bonus per night and got rejected. Then I bid for a 2.5* up to US$120 and got rejected.I did get an offer to raise my bid to US$140 for a 3* in MSG/ESB, but I declined, since it would end up being just as much or even a little higher than my back-up reservations, after you add taxes.Guess I'll try again some other day.
littleJ Posted August 8, 2010 Author Report Posted August 8, 2010 I've been trying again a few times and today I tried for a 2.5 star in CPS, TS, MTW, MTE, MSG and ESB up to $145 and still nothing...
AaronJB Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Thank you for keeping us updated; sorry to hear your bids were not accepted. thereuare Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Previously you didn't want to bid $140 as it went over your back-up reservation but just now have bid $145... have your thoughts on your back-up hotel changed? Where and how much is your backup. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. littleJ Posted August 8, 2010 Author Report Posted August 8, 2010 My backup is on the UWS, on 77th st., and it is a good hotel, I've stayed there before and enjoyed it. The average night is $160 without taxes. I would like to stay closer to midtown and spend less money, but I don't think I'm going to get any luck with priceline for these dates.
Fabfrugal Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 Just curious: How did you get On the Avenue for so cheap? I'm pulling up the same dates and they start in the $300s.
littleJ Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 I did that reservation in May, when I first thought about going to NYC. I was just looking at their website and thought it was a good price, so decided to guarantee it and if I'd change my mind, I'd just cancel it.
