I am planning a trip to NYC with my daughters (12 & 13) to see the city all dressed up in its Christmas finery. This is a first time visit for all of us. We will arrive 12/18/10 and leave 12/22/10 (with some flexibility). I don't really have a budget in mind yet, and want to stay somewhere nice, but don't have an unlimited budget. I also know that some hotels will have holiday packages. I am looking for suggestions/tips on where to stay and what to do.

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Are there are particular areas you would be interested in staying? In terms of PRICELINE / HOTWIRE, the best choice would be HOTWIRE, as PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy/1 bed, and that is most true in NYC, where rooms are often very small and 2 beds is uncommon. HOTWIRE actually has a 4* in Times Square when searching for 2 adults/2 children for $269, which - while pricey - actually was less than I'd expected to see for TS during this period - the cheapest 4* on HOTWIRE when searching for 2 and 2 is in TS. There is also a 3.5* MTE for $163.

Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Not sure where the 'break' will be, but iirc last year 12/15 was the dividing point between EXTREMELY high rates and MUCH LOWER rates. Generally speaking the closer you can get to Xmas the better off you'll be.

It's not clear from your post... are you 1adult/2children?

Yes, 1 Adult 2 Children. We may take the redeye on the 17th, arriving on the 18th, and leave on the 22nd or 23rd. As for where we want to stay, I have no idea. I would like to take them to see the tree at Rockafeller and to see the Rockettes Christmas program. Of course we will do some shopping, they are girls after all. Somewhere close to those activities would be good.

I think my biggest question is when to make the reservations. How far out should I do it?

Oh, what is iirc?

See the related "bid early or close" link in our PRICELINE FAQ.

However, the choice is yours, but since i'd recommend HOTWIRE over PRICELINE given you're triple occupancy, i would do a search there and see if anything is offered within your desired star rating, zone, and budget. If you see a good deal there then i'd be prepared to take it (and we can try to help you ID it beforehand)
