jtraveler
Hello,I have a question to people who use high speed internet connection at thehotels they visit and are knowledgable about computers/networking.Can you say please, whether the internet provided at hotels (assuming you bringyour own laptop) uses NAT or firewall always/often/sometimes/rarely/never ?Or can you get an internet wan address so it is possible to do at a hotel all thatis possible with a home connection ?Is the connection being wired or wireless has any baring in this at the HOTELS ?(like wired connection will most often receive an internet wan address while wirelesswill not - get a lan address via the NAT).Thanks. zbenye
My experience has been:No difference between wired and wireless. Most hotels give a NAT address (192.168.xxx.xxx etc.)Very few hotels give you a choice (in the login screen) between firewall and no firewell (Hilton Garden Inn; Larkspur Landing in South San Francisco). However the firewall has the standard ports enabled, so you can pretty much use any widely-used application.Just once have I stayed at a hotel (Doubletree - Chesterfield Missouri) where I couldn't connect to my company's VPN gateway. I called the support number of the hotel's ISP and they switched my room from a private IP to a public IP. Link to comment
