curtise21 Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 Hi Everyone,I am hoping you can provide me with some advice. I have only recently discovered Priceline and am hoping to bag a bargain for my forth coming trip to New York from 1 Sept - 8 Sept (7 nights).Ideally we are looking for a 4* in either CPS, ESB, MW or UWS for around $160 a night (or preferably less!) but could probably stretch to $180, if this isnt too realistic also happy to look at 3.5* in ESB, MSG, ME or TS.I also read on some boards that it can be difficult to get a good rate when looking for 7 nights, so would perhaps consider splitting the week between two different hotels (preferably 3.5* for the start of the trip and move to a nicer 4* for our last few days). But I'm not sure if the inconvenience of having to switch hotels during the week will be worth the potential savings?!Would appreciate any help or advice you can provide! Thanks!

curtise21 Posted June 25, 2010 Author Report Posted June 25, 2010 I've tried again tonight using the PRICELINE link above - but so far up to $165 a night with no luck so far. Would like to get an idea if this is a realistic price for this time of year, from what I have seen on the bid calendar for similar times of year people have been able to get a 4* for $120 a night?Any hints or tips gratefully received!!
AaronJB Posted June 26, 2010 Report Posted June 26, 2010 A week-long stay may be part of the issue, but September is generally a pricier time of year in NYC for hotels. Have you bid for 4* for all of these zones up to $165: CPS, ESB, MW or UWS? Would you be interested in TS/MTE?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
curtise21 Posted June 26, 2010 Author Report Posted June 26, 2010 Thanks for your reply!I have tried again today (of course using the sponsored PRICELINE link for this site!) but still no luck. I had originally ruled out Times Square and Midtown East as I thought they might be a bit to busy etc, but I'm getting less picky now!My strategy today was to bid for all zones mentioned above from $120 to $165 using the 6 free rebid areas but no success? I think the US Open tennis is on in Flushing over that fortnight - do you think that might be the problem?!Would really appreciate any help on bidding strategies, also probably happy to increase my maximum bid to $190 a night if this might help.If I did decide to split the trip into 2 different periods (ie 3 & 4 nights) any idea how best to progress with this? Thanks so much for your help!

curtise21 Posted June 27, 2010 Author Report Posted June 27, 2010 Thanks for suggesting a strategy - I hadn't thought of splitting the areas up like that to increase my number of bids!!Unfortunately however even with increasing my bids to $190 I still havent been able to secure a hotel.I've looked at changing to 3.5* hotels and think that I would want to focus on ESB, MSG, MTE & TS - do you think I would still need to bid up to $190 for this or should I be looking at other areas??Also still open to splitting the trip across two hotels if this would be a better strategy or should I stick with the current strategy for a few more days and see if any new rooms/hotels become available for my dates? Thanks again for your help!
thereuare Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 I've looked at changing to 3.5* hotels and think that I would want to focus on ESB, MSG, MTE & TS...If you decide you would like to bid at the 3.5* leave in these zones i'd first take a look at the Millenium UN hotel... for some it's fine but for other it's a bit too far east. As this would be a possible outcome at the 3.5* level in the MTE zone, i'd make sure you're comfortable with this location before bidding this zone at the 3.5* level. Also still open to splitting the trip across two hotels if this would be a better strategy or should I stick with the current strategy for a few more days and see if any new rooms/hotels become available for my dates? Not sure how much SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID will help as your stay goes from midweek to midweek... splitting is usually easiest when you can separate weekend dates from midweek dates. HOWEVER, HOTWIRE does have a 4* hotel in the ESB zone for 9/1-97 for $192, but it has not yet been identified.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. curtise21 Posted June 30, 2010 Author Report Posted June 30, 2010 Thanks for your help again - I think the Millenium UN is possibly a little far out for us, so I dont think we'd bid on MTE in that case. Could you suggest a suitable bidding strategy for this? Also I had a look on HOTWIRE but couldnt fine the hotel you mentioned - perhaps it has already been snapped up!Thanks
AaronJB Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 St Giles The Court (one of the two W properties in NYC that were recently taken over - this was previously W The Court) is $194.65 on Orbitz. Please use the site's Orbitz.com link to start your searches and purchase you do decide to go this route.
thereuare Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Also I had a look on HOTWIRE but couldnt fine the hotel you mentioned - perhaps it has already been snapped up!It's currently pricing at $202/nite and only for 9/1-9/7 (not offered if including the nite of the 9/8)St Giles The Court (one of the two W properties in NYC that were recently taken over - this was previously W The Court) is $194.65 on Orbitz. This seems like a good deal that AaronJB has found... would this work for your plans? (or at least have you lower your maximum bid to $175)?Let us know if you want to go for the Orbitz deal or continue to bid on PRICELINE / HOTWIRE.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
