missyd34 Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 Can you please help me with a strategy for bidding for a 3* - 4* hotel in the midtown east area. I would like to keep the price under $140 per night. Last summer I stayed at the Tudor Hotel for $130 per night. We are traveling to NY to visit 5 colleges. We will be leaving Manhattan 2 of the 4 days to travel to the Bronx, Queens and Long Island. The other 2 schools are in lower Manhattan. I'm thinking that staying close to Grand Central Station would be helpful, no?
AaronJB Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 Good morning. :)Please provide a follow-up to your previous Hotwire NYC thread (post in that thread what you decided to do for that stay), then reply to this thread and we will be happy to look into the above question.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
missyd34 Posted June 20, 2010 Author Report Posted June 20, 2010 All set. I posted a follow up in the previous thread.
thereuare Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 Are you driving to Manhattan for this stay? If not, will you be renting a car in order to get to the various schools which are located outside of Manhattan? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Please click this PRICELINE link before replying. missyd34 Posted June 21, 2010 Author Report Posted June 21, 2010 No, we are using public transportation.
thereuare Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 Without know the specific details of your destinations each day, i suspect that most midtown locations will work well for your needs... with a slight bias to the west side as that is where you may likely need to depart from to get to Long Island (if taking the LIRR - Long Island Railroad) and possibly to Queens (usually either the subway or LIRR depending upon how far out you're going and if location is near a LIRR station... subway is cheaper but LIRR is quicker)However, with the above noted, i would take the least expensive midtown hotel within your desired star rating.. since you're heading in so many different locations depending upon the day, there is no one spot that will be the best for every day of your trip, so i'd take the least expensive out of each of the following zones at each star level:4* - MTE, MTW, TS, and CPS3.5* - MTW, CPS (only if you don't mind the possibility of a VERY small room), TS and MSG3* - MTW, CPS (only if you don't mind the possibility of a VERY small room), TS, MSG and ChelseaLet us know which zone(s) and star rating you'd like to bid and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. missyd34 Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 I would like to bid for: 4* - MTE, MTW, or TS OR 3.5* MTW, TS OR 3* MTW, TS, Chelsea. We will be heading to Long Island one day (via the LIRR departing from Penn Station)We will also be heading to Poughkeepsie one day (leaving from Grand Central Station). I am hoping to get this squared away today since we will be arriving in the city on Sunday. I appreciate any help you can give me and I will be sure to use your link to PRICELINE when I start my bidding.I keep seeing the Hotel Pennsylvania pop up on PRICELINE, HOTWIRE, Expedia and every other site. I have read some really bad reviews about that place and I want to avoid it!!
thereuare Posted June 22, 2010 Report Posted June 22, 2010 Are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is the goal the least expensive 3* or better for this stay? (did you want to bid up to your limit for a 4* first, then if rejected try for a 3.5*, then if rejected try for a 3*... or do you want the least expensive property at 3* or higher... although i'll add i doubt your budget is going to be enough for a 4* for these dates)Thanks in advance for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your bidding. missyd34 Posted June 22, 2010 Author Report Posted June 22, 2010 I would like the price to be $150 - 160 "all in". $160 is my max. That being said, I'd like to get the highest star rating as close to that price as I can.
thereuare Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 Your all-in equates to approximately a $135 bid price. To give it a try...At the 4* level you have SIX re-bid zones, at the 3.5* level you have FOUR re-bid zones, and at the 3* level ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTE, MTW and TS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $128, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $133, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW and TS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MTW...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE3* TS...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE3* Chelsea...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MTW and TS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE3* MTW and Chelsea...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MTW and TS and Chelsea...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. missyd34 Posted June 24, 2010 Author Report Posted June 24, 2010 Well, I have used the above bidding strategy 2 days in a row with no luck. I even increased my bids going as high as $160 even for 3* places. Since time is not on my side I am thinking of purchasing a room from HOTWIRE. I have also been searching Hotels.com and other travel sites. Any other advice???
thereuare Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 What is the best deal you're able to find thru HOTWIRE, Hotels.com or any other travel supplier you've searches? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. missyd34 Posted July 2, 2010 Author Report Posted July 2, 2010 Well, I was unsuccessful with my Priceline bids. I ended up renting an apartment in SoHo through a website called Homeaway. We paid $520.00 for a 1 BR apt. for 4 nights. I thought that was a very good deal. Thanks for your help and I will use the board again for my future travel plans.
AaronJB Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 Thank you for closing the thread, and we look forward to helping with future trips.
