Hey everyone, first post on better bidding. Just want to say reading all the posts has helped me get started! So right now I'm looking at 4* NYC for 7/26-7/30 and I did the following bids (used the PRICELINE link) with no luck yet...going to try again tomorrow though.

central park south : $115 rejected

central park south, midtown west : $120 rejected

central park south, midtown west, midtown east : $125 rejected

central park south, midtown west, midtown east, times square : $130 rejected

central park south, midtown west, midtown east, times square------then i added fluff: upper east side : $135 rejected

central park south, midtown west, midtown east, times square------then i added fluff: upper east side, madison square garden : $137 rejected

central park south, midtown west, midtown east, times square------then i added fluff: upper east side, madison square garden, chelsea : $140 rejected

You can see the 4 areas I'm targeting all with 4 stars. Has anyone had any success in these areas and if so can you state your winning bid and hotel?

Thanks!

I'd like to keep it at a maximum of $170/night however my priority is more aligned toward getting a 4* hotel so if my maximum budget of $170 doesn't allow for that, well I'll just have to dig deep :)

At the 4* level in NYC you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

I went ahead and bid using the strategy you outlined and ended up in the third set of options where I specified my six re-bid zones, bid $170 and was rejected :) Has it ever been the case where someone bid, was rejected at each level, tried again 24 hours later and was successful? I'm wondering if the Memorial Day Holiday has anything to do with my bids being rejected or if I'm unrealistic and asking too low of a price? Priceline says the median retail price for a 4* hotel is $284 for this time frame. It's a little frustrating, but getting a good deal is never easy!

Getting a good deal in NYC can be particularly tough at times. Bidding again 24 hours later and having the bid be accepted is unlikely, and I think the holiday probably is not going to have much (if any effect.) At this point, a win will unfortunately require a higher bid - I can't imagine a much higher bid though, given HOTWIRE prices are not too much higher than what you've bid up to - HOTWIRE has a 4* in MTC for $199 and a 4* in ESB for $189. I would imagine that a winning bid is possibly in the $180-190 range for the zones that you are bidding on. If for some reason your bids in that range are not accepted, you could then look at the 4* MTC on HOTWIRE for $199.

What's your opinion on waiting a bit longer before trying again? My brother who has had some success with priceline before says that I should book the hotel after the 4th of July. He says that as the gap between the day you bid and your check-in date shortens, then the better your deal. He says at times he's booked a hotel a night before at a very good rate.

Nobody can say if rates will go down... or up... between now and your stay. We have seen many instances of users waiting until close to their check-in dates and getting great deals; likewise we have seen users waiting until close to their check-in dates and not being able to receive deals that others had received earlier for the same dates... it all depends upon how actual hotel occupancy comes in relative to expected hotel occupancy.
