cheesecake Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 I was surprised to read that summer is low season for hotels in NYC. I expected the opposite. Would someone please explain the reason for this?Where can I find a decode list for district abbreviations such as MTW, ESB, CPS,etc.?In July typically what star level would +/- $150 bring? Many thanks
AaronJB Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)I'm not from NYC, but I believe Summer is the low season in NYC due at least in part to the heat. You can find a list of PRICELINE hotels that have been reported to the board in this Priceline NYC Hotels thread, which also notes the zones.Which zones are you interested in staying within, and which star rating would you be interested in bidding for? Additionally, please provide the exact date/s of travel so that we can research options available for these dates. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 I was surprised to read that summer is low season for hotels in NYC... would someone please explain the reason for this?AaronJB is correct, it's the heat (and humidity) which is attributable to summer being "low season" in NYC.Please read your messages and click this PRICELINE link before replying with the date, zone, star rating, etc information requested above. cheesecake Posted May 27, 2010 Author Report Posted May 27, 2010 Thanks for the replies. The dates are July 7-16, 9 nights.I'm flexible with neighborhoods but Midtown,Central Park,Upper West Side would be ok. Open to any suggestions, preferably near the subway line.4 star to 3.0 star, with a budget up to +/- $175.Thanks again.

thereuare Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 I would recommend different zones based upon the star level you're bidding... Are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better for this stay? In other words, did you want to bid up to your limit for a 4* hotel first, then if rejected, try for a lower rated hotel? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. cheesecake Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 Yes, I'm willing to pay more, up to the +/- $175 budget, for a 4 star. For a 9 day stay in July would 2 separate bids be recommended?
cheesecake Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 Sorry. To better answer your question, once my limit is reached I'd prefer to reduce the star rating from 4 to 3.5, etc..Thanks
thereuare Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 Whether to SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID or not depends upon how much you want to change properties. I do think you'll get part of your stay a little cheaper, or at a higher star level, but not a HUGE savings. (may not be worth the inconvenience... splitting is harder in this situation since your stay goes from midweek-weekend-midweek)For example, for your complete stay HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the ESB zone (best guess is the Roger Williams) for $179/nite... other 4* hotels are higher, but if you don't want this ESB property, something in the 3.5* level should be had within your budget. If you SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID there is 4* hotel in the Chelsea zone for part of your stay for 'just' $169/nite, but it's speculated that this is the Ink48 which while a brand new, well reviewed, boutique hotel, it is not that convenient of a property as it's a bit far west, and a moderate walk to the subway. If you want to try for a 4* first i would bid the MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB zones, as at the 4* level all of the 'known' properties are convenient for the average visitor. Please confirm if you want to include all of these zones in your bidding or if there are any you wish to exclude, and we'll suggest a strategy to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. cheesecake Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 Your assistance is much appreciated.I will follow your suggestion of "If you want to try for a 4* first i would bid the MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB zones, as at the 4* level all of the 'known' properties are convenient for the average visitor." This is our first visit to NYC. If no luck with the 4 star we'll try the 3.5Can you offer some bidding strategy? Thanks again
cheesecake Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 Also, would you suggest bidding now or wait 1 or 2 weeks for potentially lower summer prices, for a stay beginning July 7?
thereuare Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 Also, would you suggest bidding now or wait 1 or 2 weeks for potentially lower summer prices, for a stay beginning July 7?See the related "bid early or late" link in our PRICELINE FAQ.Once you're ready to bid, please click this PRICELINE link and reply to this thread, we'll suggest a strategy based upon the most current prices. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. cheesecake Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 Hi,I'm prepared to start bidding for a 4 star , July 7-16 (9 nights) , with the possibility of changing to a hotel in a different area after night 5.Preferred areas MTW, MTE, CPS, ESB, TS. Suggestions on bidding strategy would be appreciated.Thank you
thereuare Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 At the 4* level in NYC you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding. The following assumes you'd prefer to NOT split your stay. If you want to split your stay, i'd still bid as indicated below trying for your complete stay, but stopping at $150-$160, at which point we'll revise to try for a shorter date range. Select 4* MTE, MTW, TS and ESB...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* CPS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes.
