austintoo Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 Never done this before; hopefully I'll get it right!1: There is a 3.5 star hotel for 6/21-6/24 on HOTWIRE:Boutique hotelRestaurantHigh-speed internet accessIt is being offered at $165 per night.2: 3.5 star hotel for Chelsea/MSGExercise roomRestaurantHigh-speed internet access$184 per night3: 3.5 star hotel Midtown CentralRestaurantBusiness CenterHigh-speed internet access$192 per nightWhat are your ideas as to what these hotels are please? Are there big differences between 3.5 properties and 4 star properties?Thank you so much.
thereuare Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Welcome to BetterBidding!Best guess for each of the above:1) The Bentley2) Ramada New Yorker3) Manhattan Centre HotelHard to say how much of a difference there is between a 3.5* and 4*... some will only choose 4* hotels, yet there is enough of a range within each star rating where there are some 3.5* properties which would be preferred over some of the 4* properties, so it's really property specific and personal preference. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. austintoo Posted May 26, 2010 Author Report Posted May 26, 2010 Thank you very much for the info; of course I'll use your links. I may investigate PRICELINE again.Had tried up to 190 for 4 star there and got nothing, maybe I'll go for 3.5.
AaronJB Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Happy we could be of help! Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links, and please do let us know what you decide to do.Thanks! :)
austintoo Posted May 26, 2010 Author Report Posted May 26, 2010 Just wanted to report back although I think I might have screwed up somewhat.I decided to not do HOTWIRE and try PRICELINE again for 3.5 stars (I had previouslytried for 4 stars). I don't know if you want to move this to the PRICELINE forumor post a copy there. After trying lower bids and adding zones, I offered $175 for 3.5* and was turned down.I then got a message that if I upped my bid $30 I'd probably be successful. So againstmy better judgement (I just wanted to be done with it!) I did. I got the Club QuartersMidtown, which seems like a nice hotel with a convenient location for us, BUT I'm only saving$20 a night, so that's a litte aggravating.Or should I just be glad that I saveed anything at this point? It isn't a $300 a night room, butlooking at the pictures of the different hotel rooms, most of them seem to be fairlycomparable.
thereuare Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Thank you for sharing your results with the board.Sorry to hear the savings didn't amount to much on this stay, but at least there were some savings. The best savings typically come when users bid multiple zones as it enables them to score the best deal from a multitude of properties... but only bidding one zone (which it appears you had) there may only be a handful of hotels at the star rating or higher that you're bidding, and if none of them have offered deeply discounted rates for your dates, then you'll keep bidding higher and higher until the deals are not as great as if you had included other areas. Also, the counter-offers can usually be undercut by using re-bid zones (Priceline Re-Bidding Explained), as explained in this thread: Priceline Suggests Price to Pay. Assuming a best case scneario, this hotel might have been available for $176, which would have resulted in nearly $50 savings per nite... much better than the $20 you experienced.Feel free to ask for help, and bid patiently, the next time you use the opaque suppliers. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. austintoo Posted May 27, 2010 Author Report Posted May 27, 2010 I actually received that win while bidding 3 zones. I started with one and moved up to 3. Oh well. Looks like a nice hotel at least. Thanks for the info.
