otto Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 After a big struggle to find a reasonably priced hotel room in or close to Manhattan for this date on PRICELINE (I bid up to $155 for a 4* hotel in Jersey City, up to $175 for a 3,5* and up to $155 for a 3* on Manhattan), finally I gave up and tried to find something on HOTWIRE.I accepted a 3* hotel in Brooklyn (Amenities: Complimentary Breakfast, Fitness Center, High-speed Internet Access) as I was hoping (and also expecting a little bit) to end up in the Holiday Inn Express on 625 Union St. However, after my bid was accepted I learned that I booked the Best Western Gregory Hotel, which is much further away from Central Manhattan. :) This property is listed as a 2,5* on the Hotwire hotel list. After checking the website of Bestwestern.com, I learned that they sell the same room (even with bed choice; choice of smoking/non-smoking and the possibility to cancel for free up to 7 days) on their website for only $135,96 (called their Internet Only Rate). As HOTWIRE gave a "lowest price guarantee" at the time of booking (find a lower price for your hotel stay within 48 hours of booking, and Hotwire will pay you double the difference), I applied for a refund and they will probably give me a refund of $32 (twice the difference of the rate before taxes). Even after this refund it would have been cheaper to book on bestwestern.com, as the taxes and service costs that HOTWIRE.com charges are much higher. So not very happy with this result, but I still think that betterbidding.com is a great website.
thereuare Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Thank you for sharing your results with the board and helping us update the Hotwire Hotel List with the new amenity combination for this property. While this property was previously listed as a 2.5*, the Holiday Inn Express uses a different amenity combination than this property, so that should have been at least a tip off that you were seeing a different property. As well, this property is in the hotel list with this amenity combination, so it would have been considered a possibility if it had been upgraded by HOTWIRE (as it had been)... feel free to ask for help and/or confirmation before your next 'opaque' purchase.Hope this will still work well for your needs. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
