mgc Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 Hi everyone,I've been to NYC many times and I've been pretty successful in finding hotels through HOTWIRE. However, first time in NYC in May and prices are quite expensive for my budget, so I'm trying to get a hotel through PRICELINE and see if I can get a better price than in HOTWIRE.The dates will be 5/26 to 5/29, I'm traveling alone and I only need a safe and clean place to sleep. Don't need a particular area as long as it is in Manhattan. My budget is USD 100/120 per day. What would be your suggestions to bid? Thanks in advance.MGC
thereuare Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 What is the minimum star rating you're willing to accept for this stay?Let us know the above and from there we'll be able to suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. mgc Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 3 stars would be great, but I'm not sure if my budget would be enough for that. I think 2 1/2 stars would be the minimum. And to narrow the search, any area below Central Park would be fine.I will use the PRICELINE links on the board. Thanks
thereuare Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I agree that $120 may likely not be enough for a 3* but we'll at least give it a shot and take it from there. You mention that any zone below Central Park is acceptable, so i'm assuming the Downtown zone is fine? If so i'd begin as follows:At the 3* level you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3* CPS, HK, MTW, MTE, TS...Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, Chelsea, ESB and DT...Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, HK, MTW, MTE, TS...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* CPS, Chelsea, ESB and DT...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* CPS, Chelsea, ESB, MTE, TS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG, HK, MTW and DT...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120Any questions feel free to ask. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. mgc Posted May 7, 2010 Author Report Posted May 7, 2010 I haven't been lucky. Thanks anyway.I will keep trying. Maybe prices go down a little bit as the dates approach.
thereuare Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 Have you begun to think about a gameplan should you continue to be rejected... lower your star rating or increase your budget? Have you considered staying outside the city and commuting in by bus/train?You don't need to decide at this moment, but i'd at least start to consider your next move. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. mgc Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 Yes, I've been considering staying in Brooklyn, and I have a back up reservation for the YMCA near the UN, which is not expensive for staying in Manhattan. I'm following a 3-star hotel through Hotwire, which is USD 108 + tax with breakfast, and according to the posts in this website it is the Holiday Inn Express at Union Street. I'm not so sure about it because of the transportation (only Union St. / 4th Ave station of the R line as the M line only operates in rush hour due to the part time extension), but in the end it should not be that bad.I'll let you know what I get after I decide. Thanks,MGC
mgc Posted July 5, 2010 Author Report Posted July 5, 2010 Just to close this thread, I didn't use Priceline or Hotwire for this trip.Instead, I booked the Howard Johnson Inn, Long Island City, at HoJo's website with a coupon code I found online.3 nights = USD 295 + USD 55 (tax) with free breakfast and free Internet. Plus, only two subway stops to Lexington & 63 with the F line. It worked great for me.Thanks,MGC
