Hi,

I'm a first time user and from Australia and would like some advise on where to stay in NY in Manhattan. I was thinking of staying around the Soho area and was looking at spending around $100-$120 per night for a 3 to 3.5* hotel. Is that considered a reasonable price and what would you recommend with my bidding?

I will be using the links for my purchases, looking forward to hearing back from you with some advice. Thanks

Thanks

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Soho is part of the Downtown-Financial zone, so you would need to be willing to accept a hotel anywhere within the shaded boundaries of the zone... you won't be able to target just the Soho part of the region.

With this noted, Downtown is usually not the most convenient for the typical tourist, better to stay in one of the midtown zones, imo. However, your budget of $120 is not likely going to be enough for a 3*-3.5* hotel in this area (and while Downtown is usually a little cheaper than midtown, i'm guessing $120 won't likely be enough there either)... i'm guessing you're likely looking at ~$150 for a Downtown hotel and maybe a bit more ~$165 or so for something in midtown (of couse we'll suggest starting lower and gradually increasing your bids, but this will likely give you a ballpark idea of what you're looking at)

Keep in mind with MTE that a couple of the 3.5* properties are a bit out-of-the-way (far E in MTE) - the Millennium UN and the Tudor (although I believe the Tudor is now a Hilton and has not yet been reported.)

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

What is it about MTE that makes you want to choose this zone... any reason why you're not including the other midtown zones? When bidding 3.5* and below, as AaronJB noted, MTE has the potential to be the least convenient of the midtown zones... unless you're OK with a 15 minute walk to the subway, is this convenient enough for your needs?

What did you intend to use as your maximum bid when bidding Midtown?

Hi, there's no reason for choosing just MTE. I don't really know what the best areas are as this will be my first time to NY. Thanks for your advise and I will definately now include all the other midtown zones :). Is it better to bid on hotels come closer to the date? Any other advise would be greatly appreciated. I will keep you updated with my bidding.

As per above, I think it will most likely take a little more than $150 to be successful in the midtown area for a 3.5* hotel, but with time on your side you can certainly give it a try.

As also noted above, at the 3.5* level there are some hotels in the MTE zone which would require a 15 minute walk to the subway, would this be acceptable? If you let us know we will then be able to suggest a bidding strategy for you to follow, and know whether or not we should include the MTE zone.

Thanks for your advise on MTE, its won't be convenient. Please advise betting strategy so I can begin my bidding. I will definately consider the other midtown zone. Thanks

One more caveat... at the 3.5* level the CPS zone contains the Hudson Hotel, which has notoriously small rooms. Other than this aspect this property generally gets pretty good reviews. Some people choose to avoid this zone based upon the room size, others figure they're just using the room to sleep and don't care. Let us know if this is an area you want to include in your bidding or not... from there we can suggest a strategy for you to follow.

I'd like to exclude the Hudson Hotel as the reviews on Trip adviser don't sound too great in terms of room size and noise. Looking forward to your bidding strategy. Thanks for your advice :)

So to confirm, you're looking for a 3.5* property in either the ESB, MSG, MTW, or TS zones (i've also omitted the Hells Kitchen zone based upon your previous comments above). Assuming this is correct you can proceed as follows...

At the 3.5* level you have FOUR re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 3.5* MSG, MTW, TS...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3.5* ESB...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3.5* MSG, MTW, TS and ESB...

Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $150

Any questions feel free to ask. As noted above i'm guessing the above will likely fall short, but we can start with the above and then take it from there.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi, no luck :)

I have tried the following:

1

Selected 3.5* MSG, MTW, TS and ESB...

Bid $100, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, rejected

2

Selected 3.5* MSG, MTW, TS and ESB...

Bid $130, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $135, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $140, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $150, rejected

What do I do now?

Is it harder to get a good price closer to the date?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

As far as pricing getting better/worse as you get closer to your dates, see the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ.

I had noted above that i thought $150 might be a bit of a stretch, but at this point your choices come down to:

-wait it out and try again at the same bid amounts

-increase your maximum bid

-lower your star rating

-add other nearby zones (perhaps consider the MTE and/or CPS zones)

-split your bid (see SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID for more info)

Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there.

Once you decide how you'd like to proceed let us know if you'd like a revised bidding strategy (only ONE re-bid zone available at the 3* level). Also, if you decide trying for a 3* is the route you'd like to take, do you also want to now include the Chelsea zone?
