rwethereyet? Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 hello everybody,I am looking for some help for a 4* hotel in NYC.This will be my second time using PRICELINE (first time used it for Baltimore and was SUPER happy).I am not picky about the location cause I know we will be taking the metro to go everywhere. But I have a question, which are the best areas to start bidding for a 4*??We have a 3 yrs old son and I am not looking for small rooms (I have read that 3.5* have small rooms). I will try to bid up to $180 since I saw that most of 4* hotels have super high price parking fees :) I have a back up hotel right now and that's pretty much the price I am willing to spend...the one I booked for "just in case" is a 2.5* (GREAT reviews on Tripadvisor but still, would love to get a 4* for the same price:))Thanks in advance!!!!
AaronJB Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 There are hotels at all star levels in NYC that have small rooms (while there are some exceptions, rooms in NYC are on the smaller side), and if you are looking for more than 1 bed, HOTWIRE would be a better option in this situation given that you can search for the amount of people in your party. PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy/1 bed. Many prefer the centrally located Midtown areas (MTW/MTE/TS/CPS), although Hell's Kitchen and Empire State Building are also areas a bit further out with 4* options. What is the price of the back-up that you have reserved?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
rwethereyet? Posted April 23, 2010 Author Report Posted April 23, 2010 We are fine with 1 king size bed...hopefully we will not get a room with just 1 double...is there anything you can do if that ends up to be the case?? can you call the hotel and get at least 2 double? or maybe a roll away??Are there 4* with rooms with 1 bed still around, especially in NYC??My back-up is $188 without taxes and with a $20 parking fee for each night
thereuare Posted April 23, 2010 Report Posted April 23, 2010 You can request a room with more than one bed (or a King sized bed) but the hotel may not be able, or willing, to accommodate your request. Rooms in NYC with two beds (or with a King bed rather than a Queen) can often cost more than a room with a single bed so the hotel may not be willing to provide you with such a room OR may require an additional fee for an upgrade. Single bedded rooms exist at all star levels in NYC and is probably more the norm than not... and quite a few rooms are so small that they can't accommodate a rollaway.Your PRICELINE reservation is for a 'standard' room which will accommodate double occupancy... after that it's at the discretion of the hotel.HOTWIRE does allow you to search for up to quad occupancy, so you may at least want to see if anything there is offered within your desired budget and star level, but prices in NYC often jump substantially when searching for more than double occupancy. What are the date(s) of your stay? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you find and/or how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. rwethereyet? Posted April 23, 2010 Author Report Posted April 23, 2010 June 12-14man I really did not know that about the double occupancy, now that I felt in love with PRICELINE :)
thereuare Posted April 23, 2010 Report Posted April 23, 2010 In the "worst case scenario" would you be willing to create a make-shift bed on the floor with some extra sheets and a blanket for your 3 year old... you can turn into a play thing that you're "camping in doors". rwethereyet? Posted April 23, 2010 Author Report Posted April 23, 2010 oh I have been thinking about it :) a sleeping bag and a comforter on the floor and maybe a yoga mat...hoping the floor is not too dirty and hoping there is actually room for him :o I think I am still up for the bid and if we end up with 2 twins or 1 double bed hopefully the hotel will let me get a room with an extra bed or something or... it will be "camping indoors" :)Thanks for all your help!!! :)

rwethereyet? Posted April 24, 2010 Author Report Posted April 24, 2010 I was looking at zones and I am not going to leave anything out, that's NYC for me, hoping a metro is near the hotel, we will do the walking all around but I don't think I will be bidding in Brooklyn (too far out??), Long Island city and Coney Island.I am thinking all the zones are fine, right??Thanks again for all the help
thereuare Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 Personally i would try for the most convenient zones first (MTE, MTW, TS, CPS, ESB), then if rejected, try for the 'secondary' zones (UWS, Hells Kitchen, Downtown) ... especially when traveling with children, convenience plays a factor; but ultimately it's up to you.Let us know which zones you'd like to bid (or all of them if you'd like) and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rwethereyet? Posted April 25, 2010 Author Report Posted April 25, 2010 I really appreciate your help. When you say "convenience" what do you mean (in this case)??Your suggestions sound great to me so I would really appreciate a strategy to follow!! :) Thanks again!!!
thereuare Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 When you say "convenience" what do you mean (in this case)??While i enjoy walking too, especially in new cities, too much walking with small kids (even if they're in a stroller) can be tough... they can't walk too fast and get board easily if they're required to be in their stroller for too long. Therefore, i would prefer to be more centrally located (at the 4* level MTE, MTW, TS, CPS, ESB) vs. a location where i may need to travel a little more (UWS, Hells Kitchen, Downtown) each day before getting to my 'destination'. All of the zones listed are "do-able", but some are a bit more convenient than others, and when traveling with small children, convenience becomes a bit more important. (not just travel time each day, but easier to get back to hotel for a 'stop' during the day for a quick nap, if you forget something, need a change of clothes for food/drink spilled on clothes, replace a missing shoe, etc, etc... you just never know what 'unexpected' will happen during the day when traveling with kids)Let us know your thoughts and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rwethereyet? Posted April 25, 2010 Author Report Posted April 25, 2010 I agree with everything you say of course.I just did not know that some zones have hotels closer to the metro...how do we know that? We have been to NYC before but that time we booked a hotel not using PRICELINE so I picked the area and the hotel looking at the closest metro station possibly. With PRICELINE I just don't know how to do that, that's why I am not picky about the zone but if you can help, that would be wonderful. Anything that will make our trip easier is more than welcome. I would love your help with a 4* using the zones you mentioned. Thanks
AaronJB Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 As noted above, at the 4* level, the MTE, MTW, TS, CPS, ESB zones are the most central, while zones like UWS, Hells Kitchen, Downtown are further out. At the 3.5* level, the MTE level does have a couple of possibilities that are "out of the way".The best choice would be to try to bid towards your desired "max" in the most optimal zones first, then if that doesn't work, then consider other zones. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 At the 4* level you have SIX re-bid zones.
