plbookguy Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Well, after failing all over PRICELINE with $60 3* and $71 3.5*, I turned to HOTWIRE.I'm seeing a 3* $69 with gym, swim, restaurant, business center, high-speed, 55% good reviews. There's also a 3.5* $82 with smoke-free, gym, restaurant, business center, still collecting reviews. And a 2* $59, but with no icons. No icons at all! What is this world coming to?Considering there are plenty of retail 3*s at $99-109 (I mean come on, people, the Novotel is $111), this is all pretty perplexing. Any idea what those two HOTWIRE hotels are?Dates are 5/10-12.Thanks!
thereuare Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Welcome (officially) to BetterBidding!I'm seeing a different 3* hotel than what you're seeing above, are you searching for more than one room or for more than the defaults 2adults/0children?Also, assuming this won't be your first PRICELINE or HOTWIRE purchase in the last 5 years, it would be appreciated if you began to share your results with the board, so that the information can best help other users. Perhaps another user has purchased one of the hotels above but didn't post their own win to the board... i'm sure you can see how their information would help you for your this stay. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... and your searches too! Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
plbookguy Posted April 19, 2010 Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 I was searching for one room, ONE adult, 0 children. And you're right; if you search for TWO adults, you get different results!ONE adult2* $59 no icons 85%3* $69 gym, swim, restaurant, biz ctr, Internet, 55%TWO adults2.5* $79 non-smoking, biz ctr, Internet, 70%3* $73 gym, swim, restaurant, biz ctr, 55%3.5* $82 non-smoking, gym, restaurant, biz ctr, gathering reviewsI've also tried Priceline: up to $60 for 2.5*, then up to $72 for 3.5*.Considering I can get the 3* St. Denis at retail for $72 or $79 depending on room type and then a flood of 2*s and 3*s between $90 and $100 retail, it's hard to justify the relative failure of the opaque services here.
AaronJB Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 If there is a particular regular rate property, Orbitz coupons FABSAVE10 or WELCOME10 may work for an extra 10% off, while 10WINTER takes an extra $10 off per night via Expedia. Please use the site's Orbitz or Expedia.com links if you go this route.

plbookguy Posted April 20, 2010 Author Report Posted April 20, 2010 As I failed at Priceline with 3.5* up to $72 and 2.5* up to $60, and I couldn't get a handle on which hotels were being offered by Hotwire, I ended up booking the 3* Hotel St. Denis via the hotel's own Web site for $79. The hotel is well reviewed and on the side of town I want.Past bids on this board indicate I might have had to go to $86-90 for a 4* on Priceline, and I just wasn't willing to pay *more* for an opaque hotel than for a decent, retail tourist hotel. Part of the problem seems to be that an event at the Hyatt is driving up prices at that individual hotel for that week.I hope my bidding and search information is useful to other travelers.
