Priceline Hotel: NYC May, 2010

I am new to the web site - what a treasure trove of info here!

I need to see a medical specialist in NYC sometime in May. They want me there on a Monday-Tuesday or Thursday-Friday any time during the month. The doctors office is across the street from Carnegie Hall on 57th. We'd like to stay fairly close to there, within walking distance, as we'll have a few appointments over the course of the 2 days. The hotel they recommended (because it's right next door), the Park Central, is a bit out of our price range.

There are two of us traveling from Michigan, probably to LGA. Will we find better airfare/hotel deals at the beginning of the week or the end? Is it better to book hotel and air separately or attempt to find a package? What I'm seeing is all over the board - I feel like I'm all over the place and not really getting anywhere.

Is there anything I should know or keep in mind as we attempt to book? Not only do I feel like I've been spinning my wheels, I'm not finding any great deals. I know springtime in NYC is a bit pricey, but if we could keep the hotel under $150, that would be ideal. Also, ideally, we would stay an extra day or two for fun, in addition to the intended purpose of our trip, but is not absolutely necessary.

Any thoughts or tips as we continue to plan would be much appreciated.

I'd start by searching HOTWIRE for various Mon/Tues and Thurs/Friday travel dates and see if anything in the Midtown Central or Midtown East zone(s) appear for your dates within your budget... take note of the dates with the less expensive rates (where rates are $10-$20 cheaper per nite.... not just $3-5 cheaper) as these would be the dates i'd first try bidding on PRICELINE.
