1. as always, used the PRICELINE link. submitted bid for $60. not accepted.
2. I did follow up on the rental car thread. Do you think $75 would be realistic for a 3.5 star hotel?
3. My apologies. It was Alamo rent a car. As a side note, (and this may be discussed in another part of the forum), there's no way to pay when you use a toll highway in DFW area. I mistakenly forgot to turn off at the last exit before the toll began. I got off at the very first toll based exit. I looked up online how I can pay, and came across some posts via Google that described how there was a lot of fees by the company that tracks down the toll fare from the car rental company. I tried calling the toll highway service number, and gave the rep the license plate of the car that I used. Due to database upgrades they were doing (which, surprisingly, lasted multiple days), they weren't able to do any plate searches until July 14th. The rep I spoke to could not find the plate number of the car I used, and said that it either it didn't get billed, or was already billed so she couldn't tell me any specifics, which seemed pretty lame. I ended up being billed via the rental car company almost a month later, for almost 8 bucks, which I doubt is anywhere near what I actually paid had I been a TX toll pass owner.
4. Starting to bid for a room downtown Minneapolis. Lowball entry for $51 for 4 star hotel tonight. Rejected. Planning on going $5 increments to $75, and then opening up to 3.5 star hotel if that doesn't work. I know that the Twin Cities Marathon is going on October 6, which will probably drive up rates. We'll see how it goes. Any feedback is welcomed. I live in the area, and I'm willing to consider suburbs depending on how well the Downtown bids go. A week from now, if bids are unsuccessful, I will start making concessions and opening up my bid zones more.
5. not sure if 7wonders is still in the mix for finding a hotel but, what romelle suggested was exactly what i was thinking reading that post. taking the blue line from mall of america to downtown is probably the better bet since there are a lot more hotels by the mall of america vs what is in st paul. and if we're talking about a sober trip back to the hotel after the concert, there are probably 5-10 hotels in a ten minutes or less drive from the MOA train station that could work, especially if there is a substantial price savings.
6. Started at $14. declined. Next day did $15. Following day $16.
7. Got the Crowne Plaza for $60/night. I tried four star hotel at 62 yesterday (I didn't have an opportunity to bid the few days prior) but no go. Logged on at around 11 last night to book Priceline express deal to use the coupon code, forgetting it expired at 11:59 PM eastern time so, I missed out on that. Either way, I ideally wanted to be in Market Center so, this works out great. Thanks to all who submitted feedback to aid in the process.
8. this is extremely helpful. Thank you. I will for sure keep you posted but, I'm starting to lean Priceline.Express because, like you said, with the 5% discount, that puts me right in my target ballpark.
9. Update: tried tonight. $60. 4 star hotel, same zones as listed above. Bid was rejected but, this time I had the option to up my bid to $76 without changing anything. Wondering if maybe that means if I take a step down to a 3.5 star hotel at $60 if it will be accepted. I will wait and see if anyone from here as some feedback before I submit my next bid. Worst case scenario I will just re bid again tomorrow night.
10. living in Minneapolis, I have kind of grown accustomed to not paying more than $60 for a hotel like the Westin. Maybe that is skewing my perspective. I would like to not pay more than $60/night if I'm getting a 3.5 star hotel. Add 5-6 bucks/night if I was getting a 4 star hotel.
11. Romelle: thank you. I do realize that I have some time, but that is a good plan B. I'm bidding for the following zones right now: zone 10-downtown dallas zone 20-market center zone 25-southern methodist university zone 9-dallas west
12. I'm posting this more as an FYI for anyone that may potentially be bidding on the same dates as me. I am currently bidding for a 7/6 check in, 7/8 check out, 3.5 or 4 star hotels. It's a Sunday through Tuesday so, in theory, I feel like rates should be cheaper, especially at the tail end of a holiday weekend. I started out bidding at $50 for 4 star hotels. In $2 dollar increments I unsuccessfully bid up to $58. I just added 3.5 star hotels, with a starting bid at $55, which was unsuccessful as well. Stay tuned…..
13. Can anyone confirm the following: 5 star strip north hotels are the Wynn, Palazzo and Veneitan?
14. Used BB PRICELINE link. Pretty much just looked at the historicals for a Sunday for the past 4 months. First bid. $53
15. I bid based on coffelaker's experience (see below): Used PRICELINE link from above. Started at $45 for 3* downtown MPLS, got denied but counter offer of $55. I refused, added Fridley, upped my bid to $48 and got accepted. $48 + $13.77 tax = $61.77 rate on Aloft website is $146 including tax. So, I started my bid at $48, of course using the link. Got accepted for Millenium hotel. Same date. (11/17)
16. Tried 1 and 2 star hotels in Eden Prairie for tomorrow, the 15th, for $30. Rejected. Expanded counter bid of $40 including downtown Minneapolis and Eden Prairie. Rejected as well. Previously had success on a midweek. Got $40 on 5/25, downtown Minneapolis, at the Doubletree. This was a very last second bid. I did use PRICELINE links from betterbidding however, did not post the result.
17. Sorry, it's almost midnight and I may have botched the entry format for this. Anyway, used the PRICELINE link (of course). Originally bid zones 2, 8 and 10 for $45. Was rejected. Tried zones 10 and 16 at $50 and got rejected as well. Bid $53 on zone 16 and got it. If anyone is familiar with using the train as an option to get downtown, please let me know. Was pondering possibly doing that for some Saturday day activities.
18. the $79 4 star hotel has: shuttle fitness center at least one restaurant on property business center high speed internet golf nearby the 3 star hotel has all of the above, and also smoke free rooms. If I go the Hotwire route I would use one of these two, as they would keep me within budget.
19. I just went to Hotwire. Using Hillside-Westchester and O'Hare South area hotels, I came across some of the following: 4 star hotel, O'Hare area, $79/night. 3.5 star, O'Hare, $135/night. 4.5, O'Hare, $116/night. 3 star, O'Hare, $59/night.
20. I went to check out the suburb hotels (using your link, of course). It looks like it may be my best bet to shoot for Elmhurst (8) or Willowbrook (17) area. I would go for a 3 star hotel in this area. These two zones look small enough that regardless of the hotel I get, I will be pretty close the expressway, hopefully making my trips easier. Oak brook area has 3 1/2 star hotels (they technically have 4 stars also, but for this particular trip I'm not interested in that), but the area is a lot wider. I could potentially end up in the western part of the zone, which I don't want. But, it also stretches furthest east, which would put me in an ideal situation as far as proximity to highway. If I knew that most of the 3 or 3.5 star hotels were in the eastern part of that zone, I would just as soon do that.
21. Planning on being there October 22nd and 23rd, checking out October 24.
