Let me rephrase... I searched in TripAdvisor for hotels in Redmond, WA, and none of the 6 hotels listed matched Hotwire exactly in terms of number of stars and TripAdvisor user ratings. The Hyatt House and the Marriott Town Center were the closest: they were off by 1/2 on either the star rating or the user rating. Of the other 4 hotels, two were off by 1/2 on *both* the star rating and the user rating, and the remaining two were missing either/both of the star and user ratings. I did go to Hyatt House website and confirm that all the amenities were also advertised on it. So my confidence is quite high that it is Hyatt House. I suppose there is some chance that it's a place that TripAdvisor doesn't know about. Thanks for your help! Keep you posted,

How do you click through Hot.wire's new interface to find the full amenities? I don't see *any* way to get to the full amenities list. I did use the Bidding.Helper tool to find the full amenities and that's the same one I was looking at (except $2 cheaper). Hyatt House would be awesome for $90 but ... I'm a little scared to go for it -- my head will roll if I get a crummy place. What's the worst case scenario -- I mean, what other places could it be? Extended Stay America? But those are 2-stars, right? Well, I did try this: I searched in TripAdvisor for hotels in Redmond, WA, and it listed 5 hotels, of which only two had 4.5 star rating from TripAdvisor users. And of the two, one was $181 per night through TripAdvisor, and the other was Hyatt House, for $106/night. So that must be it. I suppose Hotwire could fudge the TripAdvisor ratings a bit -- the other 3 hotels had 4 stars: Residence Inn, Marriott Town Center and Redmond Inn. Redmond Inn was the cheapest, by both price and appearance (judging by photos). So, in the worst case, I think I could be stuck w/ Redmond Inn. Most likely it is Hyatt House.

I found a room at Holiday Inn Express for $96+tax through their website, so I booked that instead of Hotwire. HIE may or may not be quite 3-star but it was cheaper and I liked knowing what I was going to get. Thank you for your help. I almost always look at Hotwire for hotels, but don't always go for it.

I got antsy so I went ahead and booked the EXPRESS DEAL for 3* in Marina-Lombard for $163. It came out to $200 w/ taxes and fees. And the hotel turned out to be ... ... drum roll please ... ... as I suspected ... ... although I'm a tad surprised that I was right ... Ta da !!! Da Vinci Villa. Hotels..com has 'em for the same night for $206 + tax = probably around $240. So not bad, Priceline.express

CORRECTION: 2* or better would be OK with us. I'm trying to book a room for August 18 for 1 night in San Francisco. The Express Deal is offering $163 for a 3* hotel in the Marina - Lombard area. I'm guessing that hotel is Da Vinci Villa, which would be OK. But with taxes it'll probably come out close to $200, which is a bit high for us. I'm wondering if I can get it -- or something like it -- for less by bidding for it. Yes, I still see it. I search for 1 room, 2 adults, 2 children; March 7 to 8; Everett, WA. Comes up as 3-star hotel in South Everett for $112 + tax.

I recently called Hotwire to complain that a hotel they rate as 3 stars isn't quite 3 stars, the phone rep -- and the supervisor -- both repeated the idea that a hotel's star ratings can be boosted by its location. Has anyone else heard that? I think it's a bad idea, since they have a map that shows you the general location, and customers can use that to rate the value of the location. I think it's confusing to include it in the star ratings. You might bid on a 4 star hotel in Beverly Hills to find out that it's a Motel 6 whose ratings got boosted because it's in a nice part of town. But of course I think Hotwire is free to concoct whatever ratings system they want, but they need to make that clear in their descriptions of the star ratings system.

I believe Hotwire's "Star Ratings Guide" (linked at http://www.hotwire.com/helpcenter/hotels/s...els-rating.jsp) is misleading. It gives examples of the hotel chains you would get at each star ratings level, but in practice you can get different hotel chains at different levels. All the fine print notwithstanding, the "Star Ratings Guide" creates a specific expectation in the customer, which they do not deliver on. Hotwire is free to use any ratings system they want -- as long as it is accurately communicated to the buyer. At the least they need to include a statement in their ratings guide that you could pay for a 3 star hotel and get a hotel chain listed as an example of a 2 star hotel. What do you think?

Plus, like I wrote, I checked it out in person. I called and wrote Hotwire many times and they won't budge. I'm going to dispute the charge through my credit card.

I paid for a night at a 3 star hotel through Hotwire in "Del Mar - Rancho Santa Fe" and was given Holiday Inn Express in Solana Beach. I live nearby, so I went by there yesterday and looked inside a room. It is not a 3 star hotel. It is a 2 star hotel with a few minor upgrades, like a TV and modern linens. At its core, it's a simple, basic motel. I've stayed at a 3* hotel in the area (purchased via Hotwire), and this hotel does not compare. Trip Advisor rates is 2.5 stars (TA doesn't show on Hotwire's webpage for this hotel). On Hotwire's "Star Ratings Guide", it gives examples of hotels to expect at every star rating level. For 2.5, they have Holiday Inn Express. For 3 stars, they have the regular Holiday Inn. I called and wrote Hotwire and told them that hotel just isn't 3 stars. I told them their website is misleading when it tells you to expect Holiday Inn for 3 stars and Holiday Inn Express for 2.5 stars. I asked to let me upgrade to a 4 star hotel, and I'll pay for the difference. They said No. They explained that a hotel's location can affect its stars rating. I said there is NOTHING in their "Star Ratings Guide" that says that. They won't budge. I will dispute this with my credit card company, and contact the BBB. Do you have any advice?

I had the same problem, and realized that TA is shown only for SOME of the hotels. I think HOtwire hides them when the TA ratings are poor.

I don't see TA ratings on Hotwire website. I could have sworn I saw them yesterday. Did they get yanked just recently?
