If you get a hotel in the city, consider parking your car at Reagan Airport in the long term lot and taking the subway from there into town. That will save you some money. There are also some surface lots near the convention center (New York Ave and the 4th, 5th, 6th street areas that are inexpensive). However, not the best neighborhood.

You might find better prices if you split your bid to weekend and weekday. Weekend should get you better prices, especially at the business type hotels. Also, Memorial Day weekend might be cheaper than you think. There are no business travelers in DC over that weekend so hotels like the Hyatt on Capitol Hill and near the convention center are usually pretty empty and you might be able to find good rates.

Many hotels in the White House Capitol Hill sector will be on the blue line. As will hotels in Crystal City/Reagan Airport. BUT, I wouldn't buy any hotel room now as there may not be football this fall with the NFL lockout!

Capitol Hill is quiet if Congress is out of session. But, it is walking distance to the Mall and the Washington Monument (about a mile). The Metro also stops on Capitol Hill. Dupont Circle has lots of bars, restaurants and night life. It is the gay neighborhood in DC.
