Since the no one has reported any other bookings for 5* Madrid (Airport Barajas) I thought I would mention what I ended up with, because it was even better than what I expected. At the last minute booked a regular booking at Best Western Hotel Villa De Barajas which I was able to cancel when I found an even better deal at Hilton which I originally wanted in the first place. Hilton announced a special in the first week of December called Any Weekend, Anywhere Sale (06 Dec 2010-25 Nov 2011) and I've written a review of the hotel and this particular special here too.

I've decided to write this because there's no review of this hotel even though in theory it's still possible to get it, even though it has not been reported on BB since 30th April 2010 which is now eight months ago. It's worth checking if they have hotel specials because this is actually what I ended up with, something called Any Weekend, Anywhere Sale available until 06 Dec 2010-25 Nov 2011 which brought down their Bed and Breakfast rates to 50% off. Just as an update: we didn't get the Junior Suite with jacuzzi but they didn't stuff us into a double room either. We got a corner room with a mini-bar but no coffee making facilities, a large bathroom (by European standards), and extra bed already made even though we didn't ask for it, which was a nice touch. I've also written a review of the hotel for others hoping to stay within the Old Madrid-Bourbon Madrid area. It's closer to the boundary of Priceline's area for Old Madrid-Bourbon Madrid and may, or may not be, what people want if they want quick access to transport or tourist spots.

This hotel is not in the city centre but a few Metro stops away, in a mixed residential-commercial area. The nearest Metro stop is probably Palos dela Frontera, roughly a 10-15 minute walk. If you arrive with several suitcases it's better to take a cab which will set you back

However we're physically in Madrid for only 15 hours minus airport transit+waiting times. With a 6:55am check-in, it means we have to depart from the Pullman hotel before breakfast is served at 6am. Thanks for tip, I've never used this option before. Tried all links and getting only $219-245 for Dec 30-31, 2010. I'm guessing it's because I need a room for 2 adults+1child. I'll take the next few days to think about whether it's worth bidding at 4* for the Barajas area and just accept what fate throws at me, or I get a room elsewhere with the PRICELINE Best Price Guarantee. I can't really be bothered going back to a room in the city centre for an overnight stay in Madrid.

I am still curious why PL will downgrade a hotel's rating when there is no obvious change in the services it provides (at least nothing I can trace from online hotel reviews). Is there some logic to the way PL does this?

I was just about to bid for an overnight stay at a 5* hotel in PL's Madrid's Airport Barajas area and found to my surprise that 5* in this area is no longer available. The last bid submitted here for this area was over six months ago on 30th April 2010 also for another overnighter (05/3/10-05/4/10). I googled 'Hilton Madrid Airport' and found out that true enough, Hilton has been downgraded to 4* by PL but not by Expedia, Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Hotelclub.com, etc. I did notice the last star in these sites' ratings literally looks like a half-star. Nevertheless I'm baffled, and have the following questions: - Does anyone have a logical explanation for what has happened? - Can someone give me an educated guess as to what happened to Hilton in the Name Your Own Price option: is it most likely gone, or has the 4* category just gotten wider? We were at this hotel 3-7 July 2010, which was won at Priceline +3 months ahead of time at US$76/night plus charges (no breakfast included). Building is accessible from Amsterdam Centraal, there are two trams that can take you there #25 and #26 in less than 5 minutes. It was always going to be a busy week because a large European conference was on, and when we arrived the hotel was fully booked (I tried unsuccessfully to get a room for my mother who decided to tag along at the last minute). I was expecting to get a second rate room (if that's possible in such a new looking building), but I'm pleased to say we were treated very well. Room was quite high up the building and faced the city. A built-in sofa with movable cushions along the window wall is designed to maximise the view, I had nice evenings watching the day turn into night (which in summer is a long time). Bathroom was well appointed and spacious (for Dutch standards).

1st bid: $55 for Dusseldorf Central 5* not accepted. Btw Priceline told me $55 had 'almost no chance' of being accepted. 2nd bid: $55 added West Dusseldorf-Neuss and lowered to 4* accepted. There's a big European science conference in Amsterdam 3-7 July 2010 and it has been really hard trying to get a good deal on these days. There are also seminars a few days before and after, so it's more or less a week long event. I had both bad and good experience with the Residence Inn. I booked with PL for 2-nights on 11 and 12 August 2009, the total price was $144.99 including taxes. First the bad. On the evening of our arrival we were told that, along with 5 others, we were be transferred to the Donovan House across the road for one night because the Residence Inn was overbooked. But we could still have breakfast at the Residence Inn. I was at the tail end of a 15-day research trip and very very tired so I did not want to waste time packing/unpacking and transferring. I asked if we could stay for 2 nights at the Donovan Hotel. Front line staff said no. I was very unhappy because transferring was really quite a chore because in addition to luggage we had laptops, camera and tripod, battery charging equipment, plus boxes of paper. It was an unfortunate experience, because I otherwise liked the room we finally ended up in on our second/last day. It was big and clean, with a nice kitchen, decent bathroom, and lots of desk space. Now for the good. 1-1/2 weeks later I received 2 emails from PL stating that I would get a refund for this stay. The second one had more explicit information:

It's my first time to use Priceline and had a very tall order, so I'm posting this in case it's useful to someone else: I have a 15-day research fellowship and rather slim budget (max $1300 including tax). After failing on 3 consecutive days bidding $60-65 at city centre locations, I thought I would increase my chances with $70 bids, and break up stay into 3 consecutive bids of 5 days each. Moving hotels is fine, but stay in the city centre, along the DC Circulator bus route would be bonus (no car). Got lucky on the 4th day, plus had a fortunate accident. I accidentally pressed '6' days before the bid was submitted so in fact, I scored a 6-day stay (July 29-Aug 04), then Mariott offered option for another 1-6 days at $70-rate. I took the maximum (Aug 04-10) which gave me a total of 12 days. Now I only have to transfer once, and have only 3 days to bid for (Aug10-13). My strategy: I think I'll lower bid again to $65; try for 3-star at the Convention Center-Capital Hill, which is really where I need to be; bid for 2 days, then accept an offer to extend for another day. My questions: (1) Does offer to extend come with ALL bookings, or only SOME? (2) Someone else recently scored a 6-day stay, Aug 11-17, at Residence Inn Capitol at $65 (May 14 post).
