  1. Stayed here to attend a trade show at the Javits center in New York City and was on a budget. Decent rooms in Manhattan were going for $250-350 per night, so I decided to book a room in the Secaucus area, accessing Priceline through SavingsBarn.com. I bid $70 as it was a same day bid and I really didn't want to go through the re-bidding process. Other winning bids have been accepted in the high $50's. The Prime Suites is a true suite hotel, the bedroom had two double beds while the sitting area (seperated by a door) had a sofa bed. I was given a non smoking Handicapped room and this was totally fine. This was formerly a Radisson Suites hotel. Rooms have mini-refrigerator and a microwave. There is also a restaurant on site as well as a pool for the kiddies and a fitness center. An ATM is in the lobby in case you run low on the green stuff. :) Check in and check out was fast and parking was free. Frequent bus service nearby takes you to the Port Authority Bus Terminal for less than $3.00 each way, the ride is less than 30 minutes. Not very convenient to the PATH train stations, I guess one could drive to Journal Square station in Jersey City and park. I chose to drive to the Port Imperial ferry terminal and take the NY Waterway to the 38th street terminal, a mere two blocks to the Javits center. Parking is $9.00 and the round trip on the ferry is $11.00. Parking around the Javits during a show is usually $25 or more plus $6.00 for the tunnel plus the hassle of driving into the city. Once at the 38th street terminal, several free NY Waterway busses were on hand to take passengers to various spots in the city along pre-set routes. From Port Imperial, there are ferries to Pier 11 in lower Manhattan as well. The location of this hotel is in the Mill Creek office/retail development and near the Harmon Meadows development. There is a small mall nearby with a supermarket and Kohls department store. A new Wal Mart and Sam's Club just opened up nearby (how about a cheap $5.00 Rotisserie chicken, members only!). The Hotel's website proclaims free shuttle service to the immediate area for shopping, dining and to a local movie theater. With the recent run up in NYC and Jersey City hotel prices, this is a good, albeit less convenient, inexpensive place to base at least part of your NYC trip. The savings here could let you stay in Manhattan for a few days of your trip and balance out your budget :)

  2. not unless you're driving a 1974 Pinto or your car is a candidate for the MTV show "Pimp my Ride"!!! :) I'm as cheap as can be when it comes to paying to park, but I would never park on the street near an airport. How pleasant is the thought of coming back from a trip and finding your car is not in the same condition as you left it, ticketed, towed or stolen??? Just do a google search for cheap parking at Sea-Tac and you will find airport parking for less. Here is an example:Best Value Airport Inn $5.75 plus tax. :)

  3. Dooley, I think you still have a few free rebids, don't get discouraged that you didn't get the Venetian for $99. Some folks pay $300 and more for the pleasure. Take the advice from thereuare and use the Las Vegas Rate Checker tool, you will see prices and what hotels are available. Then decide if you want to keep bidding for your "opaque" 5*

  4. when bidding, never look back!! :)

The Candlewood is a nice property and although you can walk to the PATH station nearby, the hotel shuttle bus will take you within a 1 mile radius of the hotel. Doesn't sound too far, but many restaurants, a supermarket (with a fine adult beverage section), and a mall are in this area. I wonder if they consider the west side of NYC to be within this 1 mile radius...... :)

If it makes you feel any better, the Hotwire rate for this hotel are $109, but the rate booked directly with the Candlewood is $99.99.....

  5. made a same day, last minute bid in the Secaucus area and accessed Priceline through savingsbarn.com. Selected a 3* property and won on my first bid.

    Your Offer Price: $70.00

    Number of Rooms: 1

    Number of Nights: 1

    Subtotal: $70.00

    Taxes & Service Fees: $17.60

    Total Charges: $87.60

This property is in the Harmon Meadows retail/office development along with several other hotels, and had been the Radisson Suites. The room was a true suite with a two beds seperated by a door from an area with a pull-out sofa bed, desk, and small refrigerator. There is a restaurant on site and nearby dining options in the area are limited to the chains like Olive Garden and Outback. With a car, driving to the Water Taxi in Weehawken is an alternative means to get into the city, especially if going to the Javits Convention Center. High Speed internet was interrupted just yesterday until another provider is selected so local phone dial up charges will be waived. Probably overpaid for this stay, but it was a last minute and I wanted to stay in this area.

  6. its just a theory, but I suspect that they have jacked up the rates for dates of travel two or three weeks or more away, but for same day or a day before, the rates are lowered. As an example, on 4/25, I checked out Hotwire rates for a one night stay for 4/27 and the rate was $120. When I checked the rate a few weeks ago for the same dates of travel, the rate was around $225 or so. R.I.P. to the vaunted $37 rate...... :) When the revenue manager for this property has to explain why occupancy levels are down, will we see lower bids accepted? Stay tuned..... :)

  7. From the Doubletree Club Suites website:

To NYC: Path train to Manhattan is 2 blocks away. Fare is $1.50 each way. Ten minutes to Downtown and Midtown Manhattan. Water taxi and ferry are also available. Fares range from $2.00 to $5.00 each way to Downtown Manhattan/World Trade Center.

The Hyatt is adjacent to the Path Station, the Doubletree is two blocks away. Don't forget about the Candlewood, this is a bit further, but still a good location for visiting NYC.

  8. as with any good deal, here are some of the terms and conditions:

Limit 1 suite per reservation request.

Total Package Prepayment is required at time of booking

Non Cancelable / Non Transferable / Non Refundable. :)

Preferred room type is on a request basis only. Actual room type assigned at check in.

Even with the fine print, this looks like a good deal

  9. You should have an answer from ECT within 48 hours. What is the difference in the two rates? The Boardwalk is right next door, but a few noches down on the quality scale from the MC. NYNY is also next door, but you might not get 3 nights at that rate. The Aladdin is across the street.

  10. Get a book on basic strategy for playing blackjack and read it on the flight out (along with the rest of the folks on the plane) :) and at least you will better your odds. At the IP, you will be near the Barbary Coast, which offered plenty of $5 tables. Avoid the single deck blackjack uness you can count cards as they only pay 6:5 on blackjack. Also, there is a good show called Forever Plaid at the Gold Coast, a short cabride away, they have a package deal that includes a show ticket and dinner at the buffet for $35. Check out the Ghost bar at the Palms, Studio 54 at the MGM, and Pure at Caesars. :)

  11. AC is a tight hotel market on weekends, Sunday night is probably the easiest night among your dates of travel. Using savingsbarn.com to access Hotwire, there is a 3.5* for $146, but this has not been identified.

Some of the hotels in Pleasantville, West Atlantic City, and Absecon zones are in the $100 range, but these are 2* properties at best.

  12. The Holiday Inn is a good location for anyone wanting to commute into Philly as the Hotel is about 6 miles from the Walt Whitman Bridge into the city. At $34 per night (and I wonder what Priceline would accept during the week as your stay was during a weekend) this is a bargain.....this is equal to the rack rate during the mid 1970's when the Latin Casino (just next door) was hosting the likes of Sinatra, Mel Tillis, and BB King......

This Holiday Inn has an outpost of a barbecue restaurant called Red, hot and Blue, which offers decent Southern Barbecue...

  13. You still have time, I would make a cancellable backup reservation (you can do this by clicking the travel links to support better bidding above) at the Carlstadt Hampton Inn through the Hilton website. You might be able to get the 3* Crown Plaza in Secaucus-North Bergen zone for around $60 on Priceline, but your date of travel is a Wednesday night, a busy night for business travellers. The Secaucus Courtyard is rated as a 2.5* as is the Amerisuites. Hotwire is also an option, but the rates are in the $80-90 range. You can access both Priceline and Hotwire through savingsbarn.com

In the Meadowlands-Rutherford zone, there is a nice 2.5* Marriott Courtyard in Lyndhurst that I have won for $62. I have yet to pay for parking in either of these zones.

  14. Made a same day HW reservation, looks like this is a new one for the list. Selected Williamsport and one hotel appeared - 3* with the following amenities: Restaurant, Complimentary Breakfast, Pool, Fitness Center, Business Center, Laundry Facilities. Althought I stayed here many times before, I did not think that that this hotel could be rated 3* by Hotwire. This is just another example of "ratings creep" that plagues Hotwire. Again, how can a Marriott Courtyard be 2.5 stars and this old Holiday Inn be rated as 3*???? Priceline calls this a 2* and I think that's about right. This is a 1960's era property with outside room entrances, the pool is in the courtyard, park the car right in front of the room. It reminds me of the family car trips to Florida when I was a kid; only now, this hotel has HBO, a free continental breakfast, free WiFi, and a TGIFridays in the lobby :) . Don't get me wrong, this is a clean hotel with decent furnishings and I would definately stay here again.....just don't call it a 3* :) Add taxes and fees of $11.95 and my walk out price is $71.95. Hotwire paid the hotel $47 for the room, tax on this would take it to about $52, so they are raking in about $20, roughly a 20% margin :o
