  1. Taking a closer look it appears to be either Aria or Cosmopolitan. Interestingly, I think Mandalay Bay charges less for 2 children as 'extra guests' in the room than most other hotels. Has anyone else noticed this. The fee for children as extra guests could make a less expensive hotel come out higher than Mandalay Bay which his higher at first look. Wish 4.5* Mandalay Bay would come up again.
  2. Strip-South Area Hotel 5* July 31-Aug 3 2 Adults, 2 Children $98. 90% Hotwire rating. Recently Vdara was the most common 5* at the South Strip but this one shows having a Casino. 3. Thanks! Booked HOTWIRE through the BetterBidding link and indeed it was the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa (Mission Bay).
  4. Sorry I didn't realize I left some of the ammenity descriptions at the bottom of the page. The Hotwire search was for 2 Adults, 2 kids. July 22 to 26. Here are the ammenities again but edited without descriptions: Amenities listed are: Beachfront Property Fitness Center Pool(s) Restaurant(s) Business Center Laundry Facilities (self-service) High-Speed Internet Access Golf Nearby Tennis Nearby Accessible for the blind Accessible path of travel In-room accessibility Wheelchair accessible Accessible bathroom Handicapped parking Roll-in shower Anyone know which hotel this could be. I can't seem to find an exact match. Will book with the BetterBidding link if I can just figure it out and it looks okay. Actually, we will have a 3rd child (3 year old) with us too but we will be fine with 2 Queen beds. Thanks!

  6. Just couldn't pass up the possibility of getting a deal with PRICELINE, decided to take a chance. Used the PRICELINE link on this site. Bid accepted at $81 per night for the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa for Feb 11-15, 2009. Was a bit surprised that this price was accepted because Feb 14 is Valentine's Day and rates for many resorts are a bit higher on that day. They charge for parking and internet but I'm okay with it since I was ready to pay about double the room rate for another similar hotel. Actually the other hotel charged for parking and internet too. Not the best reviews for this hotel but it was recently renovated and we'll be spending most of our time at Seaworld, the SD Zoo, and Legoland. Also glad because this hotel seems to have a lot of rooms with 2 queen beds. I'll call them later to try and make sure we get that. Thanks to all for the assistance on our hotel bookings. Ready to take on Southern California in Feb!
  7. Great info. Thanks. Grram1: You seem to have lots of experience with San Diego and hit on a key point I was thinking about. We like to stay at nicer hotels especially since you can get them at great rates these days. When I looked at PRICELINE successful bids around San Diego (Coastal) the Torrey Pines resort you mentioned was a possibility. We were a bit afraid of winning that one because I saw comments elsewhere that they charge $ for kids under a certain age. To me, that means the place really doesn't want young kids. I happen to have 2 of them. We don't want to go somewhere that we wouldn't be welcomed. That's nothing against Torrey Pines or anyone else. We like nice hotels but don't want to be in a position where people stare at us wondering why we brought 2 young kids. Can you comment on this? Also, how is the safety level of walking around after dark in downtown San Diego? If it's borderline then I will avoid bidding on downtown. One last question, if I bid on San Diego Coastal on PRICELINE, and get a hotel in La Jolla, is it convenient to drive to Sea World? I'm surprised they don't have Mission Bay as a separate area. Thanks!
  8. After some more research we decided to book with Alamo. They charge $10 per day for each child seat but they have a maximum charge of $49.95 per seat. Therefore, if you are renting for over 5 days Alamo could be your best choice. I didn't notice that maximum charge for child seats adopted by any other rental company. Even companies like Payless have no limit, except they charge only about $7 per day. For those renting child seats, watch the child seat fees in addition to the car rental fee!
  9. Family of 4 (with 2 young kids) going to San Diego Feb 11 to 15, 2009. Looking at 4* since 3.5* seems quite variable. Tempted to try PRICELINE bid and try for a steal but two issues challenging my pea brain. Can you help with your comments & suggestions? 1. PRICELINE only guarantees space for 2 people. We need 2 beds or at least 1 bed and 1 crib. Should we avoid Priceline? What are the chances we get a hotel or a room that is unusable? 2. PRICELINE offers pricing on hotels in the Mission Bay area but for the bidding process it is not that defined. The Mission Bay area is part of the Coastal region that includes La Jolla. Is it a problem? We plan on visiting Sea World, San Diego Zoo, and Legoland. Are we better off booking Downtown? Also worried some resorts in La Jolla might freak out when they see kids show up. Any other tips on San Diego? Almost booked the Hyatt Mission Bay which has a stay 4 nights, get 1 free deal which makes the net price about $168 per night. Booked directly with Hyatt the 24 hour cancellation policy is available.
  10. First time using HOTWIRE. Used the Betterbidding link. Westin Los Angeles Airport $99 Feb 11-Feb 15, 2009. Amenities listed were: Airport Shuttle, Fitness Center, Pool, Restaurants, Business Center, Laundry, Hi-Speed Internet. Might have found a bit cheaper deal using PRICELINE but we have 2 young children and we wanted to feel comfortable knowing we would have room for 4. Especially since some 4* hotels in the LAX area cater only to adults and have only 1 King or Queen bed. If we accidentally got one of those hotel rooms I would have had to book a 2nd room immediately. Watched the HOTWIRE price for 4* LAX for a while. Moved from about $129 to $119 to $109 and now $99. Who knows, with the bad economy we might see $69 eventually but $99 was fair enough. Priceline posted price $125 per night for the Westin. Expedia is at $118.30 per night. Travelocity is $136 per night.
  11. Hopefully some of the experienced HOTWIRE and PRICELINE users can give me some tips. We're planning a trip to Disneyland and San Diego in February. We need a minivan or SUV rental at LAX. for 12 days. I checked around and the best price quoted so far is Payless Car Rental for about $435 total incl. taxes. Registering on Payless' site gives you an additional 10% off the base rate so total is about $400. PRICELINE and HOTWIRE quote about the same $435 rate. I didn't give Priceline any offers yet. I called Payless and they charge $7 per child seat per day. We need 2. I called a couple other big rental companies and they all seem to charge $9.95 per day per seat. That's $6 per day difference. Should I just rent from Payless directly and not worry about "no cancellations" with Priceline? Should I put an aggressive bid in at Priceline that lowers the best price by $6 per day to account for the child seat difference? Anyone have any good or bad experience with Payless? I'm probably paranoid but small rental companies have me concerned that they would charge me for everything that others wouldn't, like a door ding that was never there. Any other tips on how I can squeeze some dollars out of my rental car? Seems like car rental companies are getting more and more aggressive with the prices on their own sites lately.
