  1. I am having a problem getting an id for this hotel. Says that 55% of people like it (not so great, eh?).

free parking free breakfast free internet

    airport shuttle pool(s) business center

laundry facilities(self serve) high speed internet access wheelchair accessibility

    accessible bathroom handicapped parking

$53 per night, selling elsewhere for $124 (which should let out La Quinta whose top is $90)

    Thanks.

  2. I got it. Pardon me, I should have looked more carefully. Hilton downtown on St Charles, most likely. I can get it for $68 on Hotwire or $85 with Hilton on my Visa card and have free breakfast as a Gold member, credit for the stay and so forth. Ghastly parking rate of $32. McDonald's nearby. Big dilemma is that they want $25 for a rollaway and if I get the room through Hotwire telling them I have 3 people, I guess they will make a case that I need two beds when I want a king and rollaway at no extra charge. I can't sleep sharing a double bed. Thanks for your patience....You can delete the whole thing if you like.

  3. There is, at this time, only one hotel in the Rome (south) area participating in Hotwire. The hotel shows as having a shuttle (in this case to the airport and to town but with a small fee - 3 euros to town and 3 euros back, 5 euros to the airport), fitness center, pool, restaurant, business center. On line, I could have booked with Sheraton for $157 which would have included breakfast. Hopefully, their breakfast is not that expensive or we would have been better off paying and getting Starwood points. The Sheraton Golf Parco, just down the street, was even less but no breakfast and queen beds, not king, like Roma. But their shuttle is free. You can see I gave a lot of thought on this one as the advantages were not as great as usual.

Priceline surprised me with a 3 star and a 4 star choice. I was not expecting that and I was not willing to be the goat on the 3*, esp since Priceline gives you no clues. I think the 4* had to be Sheraton Roma so that was what I bid on.

  4. Maida Vale is an interesting Muslim neighborhood. If you want dry cleaning, go across the street which is where Marriott sends your things for SO MUCH MORE. Rooms are only fair but if yours faces back, it will be quiet. We had a very good dinner at the mosque across the side street from the hotel. The only breakfast we could find outside the hotel was at McDonald's about two blocks away! Have fun!

  5. BIG ADVICE: Use Mapquest to locate this hotel. Our AAA map was not up to the task as Somerset on its map was not near this hotel. It is off 287 out of Staten Island, exit 10, Easton. It also has the most cockamamy interchange we have ever seen. Beware, go slowly and read the signs carefully.

GREAT hotel - a few glitches - but an incredible value at $45 midweek Aug 22/23. Free breakfast and free evening snacks, free internet and laundry. Outdoor pool with pool towels on an honor basis. We got a king bed in a 1 bedroom suite. Very comfy bed with comforter on it. And a light blanket. Suited us fine. Nice little kitchen with all you need to cook if you want. Living room we actually never used with a hide-a-bed. About 5 yrs old and looks new. Nice bright room.

We did not like the breakfast lady as she is sullen and at the stroke of 930 AM (we woke on CA time) she whisks the food away. If you ask her to stop and let you have some, she glares at you. Breakfast was OK - scrambled eggs both AM, bacon one day, sausages the next. Some dead sweet rolls but excellent banana muffins. We managed to eat there every morning but one poor soul arrived at 935 and was out of luck. We were too late for snacks the first night but the second, it was hot dogs and chips - nothing to skip dinner for. One of our phones was not working (the phone, not the line). We complained the first night and absolutely nothing was done about it the entire stay.

Internet was DSL and they had two computers. Never had a problem getting one. No room key required, nor password.

I would pick the Staybridge over Marriott in a heart beat. It killed me to move. For two of us, especially, the price difference was almost zilch after considering breakfast and internet.

  6. BIG ADVICE: Use Mapquest for finding this hotel, not a AAA map. It is nowhere near what is called Somerset on the AAA map. It is right off 287 out of Staten Island, exit 10 Easton Road (Av?). And has the most cockamamy interchange we have ever seen. Beware, go slowly, and keep your eyes on the signs.

We just stayed two nights at the Marriott for $33 each night (Thurs and Fri). Could not get the price mid-week. After staying two nights in Staybridge and two in Marriott just down the street from each other, I would pick Staybridge even if the price is $45. You do not get breakfast at the Marriott, nor free internet. We bought breakfast one morning at McDonald's en route to New Brunswick and another at the Diner next door to McDonald's. Very ample food at the diner. There is a supermarket across the street where we bought lobster rolls one day. The room was fine and the bed comfortable with a duvet (we are not duvet people). They brought us a light blanket. It was obvious that this hotel had been built around 1970. It has one of the few outdoor pools in NJ which is why I picked it. No pool towels that we could spot. Unfortunately, the chaises. chairs and tables outside the room (first floor) and the around the pool had not been cleaned by anyone so we had to do it ourselves. Nice shampoos, etc. of a brand I had never heard of. The menu was uninspired at the restaurant. Ruby Tues is down the street and there are a few restaurants on the road to New Brunswick (Easton).

There was a fire at the hotel in the bedding material for the plants near one of the entrances. Apparently, folks like to pitch their live cigarettes into the plants thinking that is OK. Some of the material is peat and it ignites. Added a little excitement to our otherwise dull Friday night. Happens all the time, they said. We smelled the smoke earlier in the day but could see no sign of a fire. It was reported but no one could find any flames. When we arrived at the hotel around 10 PM, a fire truck preceded us on the road. I bet my husband it was coming to the Marriott and it did! The only reason they caught it was that someone had left the door open and the smoke triggered the alarms in the hall. I called the desk because the fire dept was near the lobby so they sent the truck to our entrance and smothered the fire with water. This will be a non-smoking hotel on Oct 15 but that won't stop the smokers from ditching their cigarettes outside the door. The fire dept told the maintenance man to tear out the mulch and put in rock. Watch and wait.

  7. We stayed there both before and after a flight into Albania, Nov, 2005, on weekends. The location is the pits and the shuttle turned out to be nonexistent for us. Athens, as usual, was having some kind of demonstration in the Plaka area so the shuttle was shut down. First time in we got an upgraded renovated room. They even had a demo room set up in the lobby. The renovated rooms have wonderful beds. Second time, we got a lower floor unrenovated room. We got the room both times for $80 - a reasonable price. The food in the restaurant is awful and expensive. Even the Greek lemon soup tasted like it came from a mix. However, there are hardly any places to eat nearby. We had a snack dinner in the bar which was not too bad. When the shuttle did not show up in town to pick us up, we ended up getting ripped off by a cab driver. Hate the Athens cab drivers also. They are very picky about where they are willing to take you. I could not get a room in the Plaka area so figured that the inconvenient location was offset by the price.
